STUDYING IN LIVERPOOL a life-changing experience There is no better place to start your career journey. Liverpool is home to around 50,000 students from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. LJMU is a melting pot of people, ideas, and cultures. Our staff and students come from over 100 countries, each bringing their own little slice of home to Liverpool and creating a truly unique and supportive community. Liverpool’s claim to be ‘the world in one city’ is reflected in the diversity of its well established international communities. The city’s Chinatown is the oldest in Europe. Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Somalian and Nigerian communities are just a few of the other nationalities that are well established in the city. It may be the UK’s fourth largest city, but Liverpool is also compact
and easy to get around. It offers you all the excitement of a major city but also the friendliness and sense of community of a much smaller town. From its flair for fashion, extensive and original art and cultural scene, to its love of sport, music and comedy, the city is unmatched by any other in the UK. With restaurants and cafes catering for every taste and budget, from traditional pubs to boutique hotels, award-winning theatres, art house cinemas and comedy clubs, Liverpool has everything you could possibly want in terms of entertainment and leisure services.
Football forms a major part of Liverpool’s culture, but the city also hosts world class rugby, horse racing, tennis, sailing and golf competitions. Music too is part of the fabric of Merseyside, though you don’t have to be a fan of the Beatles as Liverpool’s love of music embraces much more than just the Fab Four, through events such as Africa Oyé and the Mathew Street Festival. Liverpool reined as European Capital of Culture in 2008, a year which was judged the most successful in the scheme’s history.
When you want to escape the hustle and bustle, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Beautiful parks and sandy beaches are within easy reach of the city, and the spectacular scenery of Snowdonia and the Lake District are only a couple of hours away by public transport.
