The success of medical advances means that increasingly a population’s health burden comes from ‘lifestyle’ issues, the environments and systems that we live in. Public health is the coordinated response to that burden.


What does public health do?


Public health is the systematic approach to protecting populations from disease and causes of poor health; planning and responding to health threats; empowering communities to create healthy environments and infrastructures; and promoting health, equity, longevity and quality of life across society. In practical terms, public health challenges, changes and copes with the ‘determinants’ or wider causes of health and disease that are shared across the population, rather than trying to react to or fix individual problems, while also making sure that there are effective, timely and accessible services to care for individuals. To do this we need public health professionals to be capable in a range of practical skills and knowledge about good practice for population health.


The Masters of Public Health


At the University of Essex, our Masters of Public Health is designed for graduates from health, medical, policy, government, informatics or community development backgrounds. An undergraduate qualification in public health is not required; experience,

The MPH is taught at our purpose- built campus just outside Colchester, England’s oldest recorded town, about an hour from London. Set in 200 acres of parkland, the campus has accommodation, banks, an art gallery and theatre, sporting and gym facilities and recreational spaces, alongside modern teaching and learning facilities. There are support services, faith-based and non-denominational prayer rooms, a health centre and an extensive curriculum for improving your employability skills.
