COLLEGE OF LAW TEAMS UP WITH TOP CHINESE LAW SCHOOL TO INTRODUCE ITS INTERNATIONAL LL.M IN CHINA.

The College of Law has forged a strategic agreement with Renmin University of China Law School in Beijing and its Lawyer College to bring the College’s LL.M in International Legal Practice to the Chinese market.

Under the agreement the institutions will work together to introduce the LL.M Master of Laws degree, which is run by The College of Law in collaboration with the International Bar Association, to Chinese lawyers and law students.

RUC Law School became the first institution of higher legal education in the People’s Republic of China when it was founded in 1950 and has had more than 20,000 graduates and trained over 300,000 legal professionals. In April 2010 it established the RUC Lawyer College to deliver continuing professional development for lawyers and practice-focussed training for law students. The College of Law is its first international partner.

Renmin and The College of Law believe that the international focus of the LL.M meets the demands of China and its legal profession as economic ties with the rest of the world continue to grow, and with it the need for additional, well-trained, Chinese lawyers suited to the rigours of international practice.

Designed with contributions from leading global law firms, including Allen & Overy, DLA Piper and Baker & McKenzie, the course provides an internationally recognised, practice-focused,

professional qualification designed to build corporate and cross-border legal knowledge and skills. Since its launch in 2007 lawyers from over 55 jurisdictions have registered for more than 1,700 LL.M modules.

Chinese lawyers and law students can undertake individual modules as professional development tools or complete the full LL.M programme; and they can do so without leaving China via the College’s innovative online course delivery with one-to- one tutor supervision. Alternatively they can enrol on the full-time, 10-month LL.M run at the College’s London Moorgate centre.

The agreement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between The College of Law, RUC Law School and RUC Lawyer College in June 2010, which set out a general framework for future collaboration. The MOU has a particular focus on the provision of practical legal training designed to equip lawyers and law students with the knowledge and skills necessary for practice in the global market place. Professor Nigel Savage, Chief

Executive of The College of Law said: “Despite the recent and dramatic expansion of China’s domestic legal services sector, there remains a need for well-trained lawyers with the practical skills necessary to handle complex, cross- border, transactional work - such a key driver of the Chinese economy and precisely the focus of our LL.M.

“We are delighted to team up with Renmin Law School and its Lawyer College. Renmin already has a reputation in Chinese legal education, which is second to none, and has sent a strong signal of intent to meet current and future market demands by establishing China’s first Lawyer College. We look forward to working with them on this and other projects.”
