6 court upgrade to round off 150 Anniversary Year
Measurements of pile depth on court surfaces last year lead Warwick Boat Club tennis section to decide that replacement surfaces were the only long term solution.
2011 marked the 150th anniversary of the club which is located with Warwick Castle as a backdrop and with grounds sloping down to the River Avon. As well as tennis, the club has rowing, squash and bowls sections. The tennis section has 11 courts in total with 7 of them floodlit.
As part of the regular checks made on the tennis surface at the club it was found that six were close to having little or no pile and had ‘hardened’. This condition indicates that a surface has reached the end of its useful life.
After considering the different surfaces available, TigerTurf Advantage Pro sand- dressed system was selected.
Having chosen the surface, the base preparation and installation of the new courts was put out to tender. Fosse Contracts won the tender and, having carried out previous works on behalf of the club satisfactorily, were selected to install the new courts.
The project value was well in excess of £100k and was paid for from club funds.

Work commenced on 20 October 2011. The first task was to prepare the bases of each court to ensure that each were free draining
and level. This was accomplished by drilling holes at regular intervals in the existing macadam and back-filling with pea gravel. A new wear course of porous macadam was then laid over the prepared bases and rolled flat thus ensuring a free draining, stable and level base ready for the installation of the carpet.
The Advantage Pro surface comes complete with permanent inlaid lines and has a dressing of sand, which gives the surface a pleasant resilience underfoot together with predictable and consistent friction. Ball bounce is true and allows play of the highest standard. The club boasts champions and competitors at international level.
