New cash-back scheme set to raise the roof on

domestic flat roof refurbishments With only months to go until the end of CERT - the government-backed scheme to

reduce carbon emissions - the pressure for energy companies to reduce their CO2 emissions and meet their targets laid down by the Climate Change Act 2008 grows ever stronger.

As we all know, reducing CO2 in domestic properties via loft and cavity wall insulation and

other energy saving measures significantly contributes to carbon reduction. Indeed, since the advent of CERT in 2008, there have been and still are a variety of grants available to homeowners to help the Government reach its annual net saving of 4.2 million tonnes of CO2

per annum.

However, an area that has largely been overlooked up until now is domestic flat roofs. Often likened to the Cinderella of the roofing industry, flat roofs have bypassed the generous schemes and grants awarded for loft and cavity wall insulation, yet these too can offer lucrative energy savings for the homeowner when properly insulated.

Even if only half the roof area is flat, when it comes to installing flat roof insulation, savings of around £180 and 800kg of carbon dioxide can be made per year*

As we all know, in any un-insulated home, heat rises and 25% of it is lost through the roof. Hence, insulating the loft or attic is a simple and effective way to save waste and reduce heating bills. Flat roofs are no different, and with nine million homes insulated to only 100mm - a thickness that has not been considered adequate since the early 80’s - flat roofs offer plenty of potential business and opportunities for energy savings.

Now, thanks to Roofshop and the UK energy industry, the time has come for flat roofs to play their part in carbon saving as a new industry-first ‘Cash for U’ initiative is rolled out. Unlike loft and cavity wall insulation schemes, this bold initiative is aimed not at homeown- ers, but directly at roofing contractors to ensure a professional installation and it offers up to £5 cash back per m2 on flat roof insulation systems purchased from Roofshop for domestic refurbishments. Based on the average size of a domestic flat roof replacement of 20 square metres, only 120mm insulation is required to average an impressive cash back reward of £100 per home. Plus, with potential energy savings of £8 per m2

per annum**,

this initiative promises genuine savings and, the most roofs refurbished, the more cash the contractor can enjoy providing they act quickly enough to reap these fantastic rewards.

‘Cash for U’ provides roofing contractors with a lucrative opportunity to boost their business performance before the CERT scheme expires at the end of this year

So where’s the catch? There really isn’t one. Providing the flat roof refurbishment is for heated areas of the home (garages are not included) the initiative is open to all UK roofing contractors and is simple and hassle free to operate. After registering for the scheme and presenting a countersigned claim form by the homeowner, the cash back claim will simply be paid directly to the roofing contractor within 30 days of receipt. What could be easier?

** Source: BRE based on calculation of U value improvement from 2.48 (Cold Deck) to 0.18 (Warm Deck). The resulting CO2 saving is 39.5kg per annum gross (ie without removal of the Comfort Factor, used in CERT of 15%) Fuel type - gas (ie the dominant home heating fuel type - if a weighted average fuel type had been taken, the CO2 saving could have been increased by about 10%). Typical average gas cost of 4p per KWh (figure taken from www.confusedaboutenergy.co.uk as at 1st Feb 2012 is 4.15p). The conversion rate is 0.1899kg CO2 per KWh and the room temperature maintained at 21°C
