Walls Cast in stone by the UK Cast Stone Association
Since Georgian times, cast stone has been a familiar and much-used alternative to expensive quarried stone profiles and finishes. Readily available, long-lasting and durable, its classical details are used to enhance entrances, openings and gables, adding distinction and character out of all proportion to the cost.
Cast stone evokes a sense of timelessness which fits in with any form of massive construction and can be formed into almost any shape or size the designer wishes. Ideal for period or contemporary styles, it is regularly used for newbuild, extension, refurbishment and conservation work, including areas of sensitive planning constraints or where natural stone is a predominant material. It complements a range of finishes, from stone and reconstituted stone to brickwork and render.
Cast stone is a special form of simulated stone, synonymous with reconstructed stone. According to the UK Cast Stone Association (UKCSA) it is ‘any material made with natural aggregates and a cementitious binder that is intended to resemble and be used in a similar way to natural stone’.
All types of architectural stonework can be produced - large, small and structurally reinforced - and cast stone’s ability to make complex shapes makes it perfect for ornate detailing. It can also take the form of ashlar masonry.
As with any building material, it’s important you can trust the manufacturer. A key difference between UKCSA members and other cast stone manufacturers is in the compressive strength of their products, which affects both durability and weathering characteristics.

The 2012 Housing Innovation Showcase in Dunfermline, Fife, is a joint project conducted by Fife Council and Kingdom Housing Association to test and showcase the many innovation housing solutions on the market. In addition to evaluating the cost and energy performance of these systems, the project will provide sustainable and affordable housing for residents.
Working in partnership with Glenrothes based timber frame developer Lomond Homes, the A. Proctor Group and Energyflo Insulation Technologies have delivered 2 and 3 bedroom general needs houses using the revolution- ary Jablite Dynamic Frame insulation system. By channelling incoming ventilation air through the building fabric, the Dynamic Frame system allows the timber frame walls to meet u-values of 0.15, in a 140mm stud, with no increase in wall depth, maximising internal space for the residents, while minimising their energy bills.
In addition to the dynamic insulation, the project also utilises the Reflectatherm vapour control layer and Refectashield-TF 0.73

Steadmans’ composite roof and wall panels are ideal for use in a wide variety of buildings, from commercial and warehouse to office blocks and leisure facilities. AS35 panels are manufactured in a quality process certified to ISO 9001:2008 using non-ozone depleting technology.
This provides designers with an environ- mentally responsible product, with excellent thermal performance and a predicted service life of 40 years. Available in a range of thicknesses, the panels can be specified to achieve insulation U-values, aiding compliance with the latest L2 regulations. The panels are also Loss Prevention Certification Board approved.
The UKCSA has produced a generic specification for the material, which has become the industry benchmark. Its downloadable from
www.ukcsa.co.uk. The NHBC says the starting point in specifying cast stone is to ensure it complies with the latest version of BS1217 or, better still, the higher standard adopted by UKCSA members. The members of UKCSA are: Bradstone, Broadmead Renaissance Cast Stone, PD Edenhall, Forticrete, Haddonstone, Plean Precast, Procter Cast Stone and Woodside Cast Stone.
