Sustainable building starts with NUDURA

NUDURA Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) provide design professionals, architects, home owners and contractors with a more efficient, sustainable way to build concrete homes and commercial ICF structures. Building with NUDURA Integrated Building Technology allows concrete homes and commercial buildings to be built stronger, more energy efficient, comfort- able and environmentally friendly.

NUDURA ICF benefits include long term value and affordability, faster and more efficient building, limitless design capabilities, flexibility and simplicity, and installer friendly building systems.

A NUDURA ICF structure can provide U-Values as low as 0.11*, saving building owners over 70%* in annual energy costs. The energy performance that comes from a NUDURA form is derived from the combination of thermal mass and airtightness and has been tested to be as low as 0.5m3

/m2

Building with NUDURA reduces a building’s operational energy demands and, as a result, the structure’s carbon footprint.*

NUDURA buildings offer occupants greater comfort due to superior performance of the building system which overcomes thermal bridging. Stable temperatures are maintained within a building and draughts and cold spots are reduced.

NUDURA offers greater resistance to sound, fire and impact. Ideal for both commercial and residential applications, a NUDURA form acts as an effective sound barrier by dampening sound vibrations from unwanted external noise. It provides a Sound Reduction Index (SRI) rating of SRI 51 and higher, when based on a minimum 152mm form and concrete core thickness with code-compliant finishes. The strength of NUDURA comes from the solid concrete core. NUDURA walls are built with steel reinforced concrete and a non-toxic, fire retardant expanded polystyrene, providing a fire protection rating of up to four hours. NUDURA technology offers greater impact resistance and will withstand windspeeds of up to 250mph.

A NUDURA structure is built to last and retains its value longer. The main structural element in a NUDURA building is reinforced concrete which offers substantially better durability and requires lower than average maintenance and repair over its lifetime. The solid thermal mass of NUDURA offers unique qualities. Monolithic concrete is layered between two continuous pieces of 67mm EPS foam which isolates the concrete and significantly reduces the flow of heat through a wall.

NUDURA walls have a high storage capacity with low thermal conductivity. This thermal mass helps to stabilise the internal temperature from day to night fluctuations and provides a largely self regulating environment. Benefits include less energy consumption, reduced requirement from mechanical heating and cooling and greater costs savings over the year.

UK’s First ICF School

A unique building envelope solution, NUDURA was specified for the UK’s first ICF School at Woodside High School in London’s Wood Green.

Apollo Education selected NUDURA for its ability to accelerate the build process, its contribution to energy efficiency and its design flexibility. NUDURA forms enabled each building envelope to be made watertight earlier in the construction programme than traditional methods and have permitted fitting out to commence some six to eight weeks sooner than with conventional block work. Even the freezing winter conditions did not delay the build, since concrete can be poured in temperatures of up to minus 30 degrees.

All forms are produced from recycled or recyclable material, using no ozone depleting processes, producing little waste during construction and emitting no CFC or HCFC’s.

The NUDURA system also offers design, flexibility over modular pre-cast concrete options, allowing Apollo to accommodate a design which replicates the architectural features of Woodside’s existing buildings.

In 2011, independent air testing was carried out to one of two newly built school blocks. This testing, which showed Block W had achieved an exceptional 2.19m/3

hr, outstripped all

expectations on air permeability. Apollo

Education had set out to achieve a rating of 5.0m3 /hr. Currently, Building Regulations require less than 10.0m3 /m2 /

hr., making Block W almost five times more efficient than the UK standard. Apollo’s Project Manager John Hill said that he had achieved the best result ever at Woodside High School.

*When the 150mm insulation insert is used in conjunction with NUDURA’s 305mm core form, this delivers completed wall assemblies with U-values as low as U.011.
