Canterbury the big winner in taste awards

FOOD and drink businesses in the Canterbury area were celebrating after taking several prizes at the Taste of Kent 2012 awards. First-time winner Mama Feelgoods, based in the town, picked up the Kent Local Food Retailer of the Year award for its “friendly service and great product range”. Godmersham Game, from nearby Godmersham, picked up the Kent Meat Retailer of the Year, and Core Fruit Products, of Canterbury, won Kentish Fruit Juice of the Year. The awards, organised by Produced in Kent, were hosted by BBC Radio presenter Matthew Davies at Oakwood House Hotel in Maidstone.

Julie Monkman, manager at Produced in Kent, said: “Tonight we have been

celebrating the county’s food, drink and farming heroes. It’s been wonderful to recognise not only the outstanding food and drink producers, the food retailers, farmers’ markets and best dining experiences in Kent, but for the first time to reward the farming community too.” Kingscott Cheese in Staplehurst took Kent Food Producer of the Year for its Kentish Bluebell cheese. The first ever Produced in Kent Special Award was awarded posthumously to Michael Barry OBE and received on the evening by his widow Jennie Bukht. The popular chef and television personality received the award for his exemplary work and contribution to Kentish Fayre, which became Produced in Kent.
