Town Profile

24hrs in.... Chilham

The ancient village of Chilham lies in the North Downs and valley of the River Stour. The village is a popular magnet for walkers as well as for visitors who flock to admire the almost-perfectly preserved 15th century square with its half-timbered homes.

The square is bordered by the church and castle, though the latter is closed to visitors with the exception of an occasional open day.

However, it is still possible to stay within the grounds of

the castle, at the 300-year old Castle Cottage – once home to the castle’s head gardener.

The village has one of the oldest burial barrows in the

country at Juliberry Down, plus several ‘Pilgrims' Ways’ that wend their way through the village, as well as walks through ancient orchards and well-stocked lakes for fishing.

A popular Pilgrims Fayre is held in the village square on the Spring Bank Holiday each year.

What to see

Most of Chilham is in a conservation area and many of the buildings in the Square and in the four streets leading into

it date from the late 15th century. Among the oldest houses in the village are Tudor Lodge (now occupied by Bloomsbury & Co), Cumberland House (built between 1470 and 1510) and Hurst Farmhouse in Mountain Street, which dates from 1300-1335.

St Mary’s Church, which was mentioned in the

Domesday Book, has a 68ft tall tower and, from the top, there is a magnificent view across the Downs, to Canterbury Cathedral. Interestingly, the church clock was made in 1727 but only had an hour hand until 1790.

Where to visit

Chilham is just six miles from the bustling city of Canterbury, with its many shops and attractions – but it feels like another world.

14 Mid Kent Living

A short stroll from the village centre is Badgers Hill Farm & Cidery – a great place to take the children. While mum browses round the homemade pickles and preserves, dad can sample the cider and the children can feed the chickens. There are other fascinating creatures to be found here too – such as wallabies and rheas – and a tea room for those tasty cream teas!
