Making a dream an affordable reality

Based on its findings, Madelec Aero developed three new LED lighting solutions to answer its clients’ desires

Following a survey of several customers Madelec Aero found that most airlines wanted new efficient and attractive LED lighting to enhance their interior. They didn’t want to spend a lot of money and certainly didn’t want their aircraft sitting in a hanger for long periods of time waiting for an upgrade. Reducing maintenance costs and much improved energy savings were also high on the list of requirements. Geoff Livingstone, President, Madelec

Aero, explains: “This got us thinking. Using the very latest in LED technology, what if we could design and manufacture an affordable, easy solution to having LED lighting on-board existing aircraft fleets, not just first or business class but in economy as well.

“Near perfect colour matching. Constant white light the full length of the cabin, that will not dull or flicker like existing standard tubes. What if they were available in any length to replace existing T8 or T5 tubes. What if they fitted directly into existing

fittings, so no expensive re-wiring involved. What if they were energy saving, while providing perfect dimmable 0 -100 percent LED lighting for any cabin, What if they would last for +50 000 hours therefore considerably reducing maintenance costs. What if they were available in cool, warm or cold white. What if there were combined with coloured versions, enabling dimming from white to colour”. It was possible to design, but difficult to make affordable, besides there is nothing new about LED tube or downwash lighting. Conventional LED tube lights are however expensive compared to the current Flow tubes. The only way to compete was to make the requirement affordable.

Due to simple yet advanced product design, Madelec now offers three options in T8 or T5: • An LED tube that, due to its unique modular design, can be manufactured in any length and can therefore be fitted

into any existing housing. It is powered by the existing aircraft PSU or Ballast

• An LED Tube that has its own integral power supply. Therefore it is possible to connect direct to the aircraft wiring OEU or CIDS interface. This will enable the existing ballasts to be removed, creating significant cost and weight savings

• An LED Tube with one row of white LEDs and another row in a choice of colours. Therefore enabling the dimming function to reduce the white and subsequently increase the colour

Because of the way they are designed, it is also possible to fit the Madelec Aero LED tubes as a standalone system. Established in 1994, Madelec Aero has comprehensive facilities for the design, development, manufacture and support of standard and specialty products for use in the aerospace industry. Specialising in Aircraft Interior LED lighting, Madelec Aero has supplied over 150 airlines with parts and support directly from its manufacturing facility in France and worldwide distribution partners. Additional aircraft interior lighting includes, reading lights, passenger warning signs, dome lights, ambient lighting, flat- light technology, powered and non powered (Photoluminescent) emergency floor path marking. Madelec is involved in the commercial, VIP and military

aircraft and helicopter markets comprising OEM, spares, operators retrofit and engineering for modification (STC). Madelec Aero has a dedicated organisation focused on strategic activities and can assume total project management, design, development, sample approval, qualification, final assembly, testing, quality management, together with all supporting documentation and 3D cad file drawings.
