Future features now available Thales offers next generation IFE monitor with first of kind capabilities

Smart Video Display Unit (SVDU-G4) With sleek design and high capacity local storage, the Thales 4th generation Smart Video Display Unit is its latest IFE seat innovation. Unique to the unit are two amazing features designed around advancements in passenger comfort and the flying experience.

The first one, called Hand Gesture Control technology,

provides an innovative method to control and navigate through the many inflight entertainment options with the simple wave of a hand. No reaching for a handset or leaning forward for touch screen operation. Just sit back, relax and wave your hand in front of the seat display.

The Experience Just Got Better Hand Gesture Control Technology delivers on the wow factor in the cabin environment. Using this technology takes no time at all to learn. To make an entertainment selection simply raise your hand with a forward motion to activate the cursor and place the cursor on the menu item of your choice for approximately 2 seconds. It feels like magic and that’s what makes it fun. Play a movie, adjust the volume, or change menu screens are just a few of the many commands possible. This technology gives passengers another choice in how they use their Thales IFEC system. Hand Gesture Control Technology exists today in the living

room with gaming but this is the first time gesture technology is demonstrated in a passenger seat. To do this, modifications were required in order to address the constraints of seat confinement and finer detection of hand/arm versus entire body movement. The solution relies on a high resolution specialised depth camera located within the SVDU-G4. It uses Infra-Red (IR) technology that calculates via special algorithms the depth of the hand/arm versus the rest of the passenger’s body or other backgrounds/objects. The camera is able to detect the

smallest hand movements to ensure that the desired menu option on the SVDU-G4 is selected.

If the seat includes a handset and the passenger prefers to use it, the depth camera detection is disabled. Hand Gesture Control is a simple interface, easy to learn, works for everyone, requires low maintenance, follows consumer trends and is a proven technology adapted to inflight.

Precision and Flexibility The second feature, called Smart Passenger Interface Modules (SmartPIMs), is a future proof solution that enables passengers to connect a wide variety of portable devices to the SVDU-G4 so they can listen to or view their personal content through the Thales IFEC system. SmartPIMs address the growing use of mobile devices and gives passengers new convenience and capability. For example, passengers can connect their digital camera to the USB port and view their pictures on the SVDU-G4. This feature is the first modular and interchangeable interface technology that can be installed in a variety of configurations giving the airline choice in how they integrate the SmartPIM into the seat environment.

Up to four modules fit into the main assembly giving the airline the opportunity to offer different features by class. All modules are precisely the same size for quick and easy change-out and the electrical interface is standard. The modularity of the SmartPIM makes the product future proof which is the ultimate breakthrough for this SVDU feature. From an in-service perspective, maintenance and upgrades are literally a ‘snap’. The modules are pluggable and auto self-configured so they can simply pop in/out. Never does an airline have to replace the entire assembly. SmartPIMs supports mobile devices, is future proof, flexible, requires low maintenance, follows consumer trends and is configurable and interchangeable due to the standard size of the different modules.
