You are now free to illuminate the cabin
The ability to liberate light throughout the cabins in the sky also frees the creative minds that design them. Now there’s no need to chase the elusive dream, thanks to the KYDEX designLab
KYDEX LLC, a world leader in thermoplastic sheet solutions, is debuting KYDEX®
FST frosted-look translucents
at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2012. Aviation interior design will never be the same.
Just what is Translucency? “
When asked, people often list clear objects. While clear glass can indeed be translucent, countless items such as leaves, gauzy fabrics or champagne also fit the bill. Translucency is not just transparency; it is light diffusion. Light is transmitted, reflected, and refracted. You don’t see the object behind the translucent material, just its silhouette.
Translucency is not about designated parts and pieces, it’s all about possibilities.
David Scott, KYDEX
How Does Translucency Feel? Translucency can create an ethereal, cloud-like look, making it a natural for air travel. It also adds depth-of-field, for a layered look with multiple dimensions. In the confined space of airline interiors, this can be a huge plus for the emotional comfort of passengers. For designers, the range of emotions they can invoke has been expanded infinitely. And the mood is not fixed. It can change with the aircraft’s lighting system.
Change the Light. Change the Mood Long distance airplane travel can be disorienting. Transcontinental flights can traverse five or six time zones, rendering watches and human internal clocks useless. Light- diffusing materials can set moods for different parts of the flight, giving subtle cues to passengers on when it is time to eat, sleep or work. It can also soothe at takeoff and landing, stressful times for many fliers.
How Will Designers Use Translucency? The possibilities are limitless. And that’s how KYDEX, LLC hopes designers see the breakthrough translucents from its designLab. Certainly, long-awaited uses like cabin dividers, light shrouds and seating will spring to mind. But most importantly, it allows designers to play with every possibility of aircraft LED lighting and achieve a multiplicity of colours, moods and environs. Light diffusing KYDEX®
FST also helps
designers match the branded colour scheme of any airline, which is often infused into cabin lighting tubes.

“
One designer envisioned a shroud for seatback video monitors, allowing screen colours in motion to play. Another from a leading airline manufacturer saw an answered prayer for lighted staircase walls. From grand schemes to tiny details, light- diffusing translucents from KYDEX allow the imaginations of designers to soar.
