Seatback solutions The newest seatback solution for tablet PCs allows full rotation and tilt
and other brands of tablet PC are steadily invading the passenger cabins of every commercial airline. In recognition of the unique entertainment and connectivity properties of these devices, some airlines have already initiated major programmes to hand them out to passengers for a fee. Other airlines are developing better ways to deploy tablet PCs either as a complement or as an alternative to traditional, fully embedded IFE systems. In all cases, one major problem must be solved: how to mount the iPad so that it is not sitting loose during flight, and especially during a meal service. In aircraft environments, the iPad’s portability can be considered both an asset and a liability; airlines are also concerned about how to protect, store, re-charge, and synchronise the content on these devices.

Having extended their vision to now include the latest mobile- device platforms, Satterfield has become an early innovator in this field, with tablet-positioning systems not only for the seatback, but also mounted inside the armrest, or post- mounted into a receptacle at the top front edge of the armrest, or attached in very low-profile configurations to the sides of the armrest. Beyond passenger cabins, Satterfield offers solutions as well for the crew rest area, VIP lounges in business jets, and even for cockpit applications in both fixed- wing and rotorcraft environments.
In response to these concerns, Satterfield Aerospace, S&S Numerical Control Division, a leading designer and manufacturer of display-positioning systems, has developed a fully articulated seatback solution for the iPad and similar tablet PCs. The innovative design allows the iPad to be mounted firmly and/or removed and manipulated manually by the passenger, thereby protecting the important mobility feature of the device. When mounted to the seatback, the tablet PC is able to be rotated into portrait or landscape mode or to any position in-between, while also tilting back and forth to obtain the best viewing angle, providing a distinct advantage over other solutions in which the tablet is relatively fixed in place. The Satterfield solution is easily adapted to any model of passenger seat, and while the tablet PC is fully encased and protected, it still remains the thinnest, most compact configuration available, requiring the least
