“We can put competitive differences aside and work together for the common good of the nation, as well as our industry. We have an opportunity to make a big difference right now.”
Harvard University, physicians reported that they recommend exercise to 74% of their patients, but prescribe it for just 26%. “For clubs, the challenge is to develop the spe- cialized programming required for a successful physician-referral program, and then market the program appropriately to physicians,” explains Wing. “They must also gain the doctor’s trust by demonstrating that they’re qualified to provide safe, relevant, and effective exercise programs.” Clubs can also point to their increasing involve- ment in the growing number of workplace wellness

initiatives, which are likely to become even more important in the face of increasing healthcare costs. In a 2011 report by the Kaiser Foundation, 74%
of U.S. firms claimed to offer employee wellness programs. A large percentage of those firms cited improved employee health and reduced absentee- ism, both of which improve productivity, as the reasons for offering such programs.
“The Summit presents the best opportunity to
get these messages across effectively, and in per- son,” says Durkin. “Fortunately, both Republicans and Democrats, alike, recognize the significant impact that regular exercise and proper nutrition can have on the nation. We have a real opportunity to capitalize on the fact that obesity, escalating healthcare costs, government interventions, and healthy lifestyle legislation are all colliding. “I urge you to join us in Washington,” implores
Durkin. “Summit participants are generally people who really believe in the power of primary preven- tion and in acting together with one voice. We can put competitive differences aside and work together for the common good of the nation, as well as our industry. We have an opportunity to make a big difference right now—at this very moment.” —|
