SEIZING THE WE L L N E S S OPPORTUNITY—
This year, IHRSA
members who attend the 10th Annual Summit for a Healthier America can make a big difference
NOW
IT’S A SEMINAL MOMENT for the IHRSA universe, to say the least.
This year, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Public Law 111–148), a.k.a. “healthcare reform,” begins to take effect. Therein lies an extraordinary opportunity for IHRSA-member clubs to position them- selves as the go-to resource for wellness and disease prevention in their respective communities, to help hold down medical costs, and by doing so, create a healthier, more prosperous future for the nation.
In that spirit, this year’s Annual Summit for a Healthier America, now in its 10th year, will focus on helping participants seize that opportunity. The Summit will convene next month, May 1–2, in Washington, D.C., at the Top of the Hill Banquet and Conference Center, just minutes away from the U.S. Capitol.
This two-day event is open to IHRSA health club opera- tors, managers, and other staff members and their employees at no cost. Associate members are invited to participate in the Summit through sponsorship. Last year’s event, IHRSA’s 9th Annual Summit for a Healthier America, was sponsored by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), Chobani, MYZONE, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and SPRI Products. Rest assured, those who make the trip to Washington will find the 10th event well worth their effort. On Tuesday, May 1, Summit-goers will enjoy panel discussions and presentations by industry leaders, political analysts, and healthcare professionals who are waging the war against physical inactivity and obesity. Later, they’ll have the chance to network and share ideas and strategies with one another during a compli- mentary cocktail reception and dinner. On Wednesday, May 2, participants can meet with their respective Senate or House staff to discuss issues that are of interest in their particular districts. “To make these meetings as effective as possible, each person will receive a Briefing Book with details on the time and location of the congressional offices, a map, and useful tips for conducting a meeting with their representatives,” explains Helen Durkin, IHRSA’s exec- utive vice president of global public policy. “We want to make sure that Summit participants feel well-prepared >
