Augie’s Quest Conquers! ®

“I Say, ‘Start With

Why’”

SIMON SINEK DESCRIBES HOW LEADERS INSPIRE ACTION AT IHRSA 2012

From the perspective of Augie’s Quest, the February issue of CBI was fabulous. Patricia Laus, the owner of the Atlantic Club, wrote a letter asking everyone to get involved in the Quest. Art Curtis, the chair- person of IHRSA, devoted his entire one-page column to it. And CBI’s editor-in-chief, Craig Waters, featured it in his “Editor’s Welcome” ... Plus, there was a full-page ad for Augie’s Bash right in front of Art’s column! —| John McCarthy | IHRSA Executive Director Emeritus | Weston, Massachusetts

Joining Forces Just “Great”

> This is great! (See “Enlist in a Noble Effort,” March CBI, pg. 48.) An excellent article, and please continue to keep us informed about all of the personal stories of individuals involved in IHRSA’s Joining Forces Network. They’re amazing! —|

IHRSA 2012: Savor the Spirit

> What a pleasure it was to attend the IHRSA Convention and Trade Show—my first in Los Angeles—with my 22-year-old daughter, Anna. I was pleased to be able to give a presentation on the topic of “Leading by Intuition.” In preparation, I pondered the subject for a long time, asking myself: “What do the attendees really need? What will they find most interesting and helpful?” Then, it suddenly came to me. I wanted to speak about the biggest problem facing every

club—that of getting enough members, and keeping them active and loyal so they remain clients for the long term. This led me to think about the standard solutions. In my

presentation, I referred to these as the “hardware” of every club. In thinking about the way I try to manage My Sportlady, I concluded that the standard solutions simply aren’t suffi- cient—hardware doesn’t do enough for our members, for our business, or for us as human beings. What we need is what I call the “heartware”—the sum total of our purpose, our vision, and our values. It’s the spirit that

permeates a club. It’s the why that motivated us to start our businesses in the first place. People sense this spirit, or the lack of it, as soon as they walk through the door. During the convention, I enjoyed hearing one of the keynote

speakers, Simon Sinek (see “CBI Interview,” February, pg. 32), talk about his fantastic new book, Start With Why. Sinek is right: People don’t buy what you sell; people buy why you sell it. His ideas reflect what I’ve been thinking and feeling since I founded my business 27 years ago. It was like he was reading my mind! I also enjoyed meeting some of the incredible women entre-

preneurs and leaders who attended the event. They bring a unique and important spirit to the fitness industry, a kind of compassion and awareness that helps solve day-to-day issues effectively, laying the groundwork for success. And, by success, I mean the personal well-being of everyone involved in our industry—members, employees, managers, and the local communities around our clubs. The L.A. convention was more than just presentations,

exercise classes, the trade show, networking, and fun parties— although all of those things were of great value. IHRSA 2012 helped us to rediscover the spirit that drives our industry and informs our clubs. IHRSA supports the industry with passion, care, and generosity,

and, in so doing, improves the health and lives of people world- wide. As a convention attendee for the past 25 years, and now, as an IHRSA board member, I can tell you that the association’s staff is dedicated to giving clubs the tools they need to prosper and create a better future. That’s why the IHRSA convention remains the biggest event in the industry! —|
