1930s
Margaret (Peggy) Newhall SHH ’36, JC ’38
I am living in Avondell, a senior
retirement community in Bel Air, Maryland. I am close to my daughter and her husband and 30 miles from Baltimore where my granddaughter, Debbie (Rath) Kennison ’86, lives with her family. I moved here to be close to them and to my three great-grandchildren—Charlotte, 16, Beatrice, 12, and Henry, 8. Debbie is an OES alumna. I enjoy the Maryland countryside and the weather, much more sunshine than in Portland.
1950s
Sally Cohn ’52 Retirement is getting busier and
more interesting. I’m playing again in the Portland Women’s Jug Band, which has performed twice recently. I still volunteer at two schools and was recently appointed to a vacancy on my parish council. I recently did a paid hand-whistling performance at a private party. I still peddle my books from the car or the walker.
Paula Barner Smith ’52 Since none of our three children
live near us, we have interesting places to travel. Son Ashley and his family just moved to Washington, DC, from Dallas. Valerie and family live in upstate New York, and Shelley lives in the Minneapolis area. We also spend time each summer at our cabin in northern Minnesota, which has been our summer destination for over 40 years and where we all enjoyed sailing and swimming and fishing in the wonderful clear lake waters near Brainerd. Golf tournaments fill much of my summertime here at home. We still live in the country near
Wichita where we planted hundreds of trees over the last 35 years. Now we have doubts about our sanity as we

annually clear away all the leaves each fall! Thanksgiving will be spent with Valerie’s family near Syracuse, New York; D.C. will be our destination on the way home; Shelley and her boys will be here at Christmas, so we are looking forward to the holidays. I look at each issue of the OES magazine hoping to see news from my classmates and others from the Hall.
Barbara Greene Phillips ’53 Advanced communication skills and
leadership development are the areas that inspire me now. I get to show people how to deepen and enrich conversation and bring out little-known abilities of leadership working as a coach, facilitator, and mediator within organizations and through stand-alone programs. OES gave me a lot of confidence and a chance to try many new things. Most recently, I’ve written a song and am setting it to music. I love what I see OES doing with all of you.
1960s
Donna Bookhultz Kilgore ’60 I am still active and enjoying our
retirement in St. George, Utah. My husband, Morris, and I play golf three times a week, and in the winter I ski with a group of ladies (The Snow Flakes), and in the spring and fall I kayak with the same group (The Yakers). We
are spending our summers in Dolores, Colorado, and enjoy the fly fishing and golfing in the cooler weather. I hope all is well with the rest of our class. I have lost touch with everyone and would like to catch up with classmates.
Joanne Dobson ’63 We had 16 of the class of 1963 for the
weekend of September 16-18, which we spent on the Oregon Coast in Gearhart. Some of us stayed in the house of our classmate Penny (Shank) Popma, and others were in a rental house or rented their own place. Walks on the beach, walking around town, spending time catching up with each other with festive dinners, entertainment from Nan (Butler) Perrott playing her accordion ... totally AWESOME! We have been trying to meet with all classmates at least once a year. Last year was at Kahneeta in Warm Springs, Oregon, and next year will be at our classmate Sue McKenzie Himoff’s camp in New York on Brant Lake.
Robin Karr-Morse ’63 I am in Hawaii vacationing on Oahu
where I just had a mini reunion with Joanne Dobson from my SHH class. I return this weekend to Portland and my private practice but leave again Thursday for NYC to meet with my publisher. My new book, Scared Sick: The Role of Childhood Trauma in Adult Disease, comes out January 3, 2012!
