THE GRAPEVINE

Lisa DeGrace, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations

ALUMNAE/I COMMUNITY How can a group of people, spanning

several generations and four schools, be a community? Whether you went to St. Helen’s Hall, the Junior College, Bishop Dagwell Hall, or OES, you are a part of our alumnae/i communities: starting with your circle of friends, and growing to your class, your school, and finally including the entire breadth of alumnae/i, parents, faculty, grandparents, and future alumnae/i. It’s easy to argue that we have nothing in common, no traditions that span the entire history of the school. Yet I would argue that our commonality comes down to you: your passion for life and its pursuits, and a commitment to the greater good of your community and world. I’ve been speaking recently with a

woman who is publishing the diaries of her great-aunt Doris online, including Doris’s experiences at St. Helen’s Hall from 1925 to 1927. Doris’s diaries talk about boys, cars, classes, and friends, in a voice that could be mistaken for a

teenager today; she is funny, observant, heartsick, kind, smart, and extremely witty. Look for more about Doris in our next issue of the magazine. Fast forward to the Class of 1993:

This issue’s class notes features a preponderance of updates from this class, due in no small part to the “covert” efforts of a class member who encouraged participation from far and wide. Here again, we hear the voice of OES … quirky, irreverent, funny, accomplished, and caring. While the updates may qualify as our most unusual set of class notes to date, they also speak with heart about day-to-day life, both mundane and amazing. Every generation at this school has this

passion for life, and that simply can’t be underestimated. It is just this passion that brought

me back to OES. I worked here from 1999 to 2004, and I returned because I missed this community of interesting, passionate people who inspire me. In these class notes, you will read about alumnae/i making a difference in their homes, communities, and in the global community. It is truly inspiring. I look forward to re-connecting, or to connecting for the first time.

I want to hear your story, too. Join the discussion at facebook.com/oes.alumni or share your story by emailing alumni@oes.edu or writing to OES.
