SNAPSHOTS Senior Tests InvenTeam Pump Ben Ulmer ’12 fine-tunes a pump powered by pedaling a bicycle.
in Liberian Community Ben U. ’12 took a trip to Liberia last summer during which he worked with Liberians to set up a human-powered pump that he and other students on the InvenTeam have developed. OES students designed the pump to use locally available materials and allow community members to improve their efficiency and thereby grow more food for local consumption. Actually installing the pump allowed Ben to identify ways in which the pump design needs to be refined, and he and other students will work to improve it this year. The InvenTeam is part of a national initiative by the Lemelson Foundation and MIT to encourage students to rely on inquiry and hands-on problem-solving to find solutions to real problems.
Students Grow Food to Share First-graders harvested lemon balm from their garden to make tea.
in Campus Dining Hall Gardens have sprouted up around campus and are providing food for student meals. The chefs from Bon Appétit, which provides food for the dining hall, are working with the Lower School students to harvest produce from the school gardens. Every class in the Lower School has a garden plot, and last spring Chris Thompson’s First Grade class decided to dedicate their plot to herbs. Last year’s class prepped the plot and planted, and this year’s class harvested the herbs. In addition to supplying the dining hall, they made lemon balm tea to drink in their classroom.
Grandparents Enjoy a Morning Grandparents saw what their grandchildren are learning in class. 14 OES MAGAZINE WINTER 2012 14
in Student Classrooms A blustery storm failed to keep grandparents away from OES on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. They braved the weather to attend Grandparents and Special Friends Day festivities that included breakfast, an assortment of student choirs, and visits to the children’s classrooms. Some helped with projects involving counting or painting or writing, while others just sat back and enjoyed watching the kids work on their projects.
