Art Meets Literature in OES Exhibit ROTATING DISPLAYS HIGHLIGHT THE WORK OF STUDENT ARTISTS

S

tudents from all three divisions coordinated work in art classes for an exhibit to celebrate the importance of

books. The work was timed to coincide with November’s OES Book Fair, which raises money for Friends of the OES Libraries (FOESL). Children in Lower School created folded and painted books that they could use for illustrated stories or poems that

they made up. Middle School students showed the evolution of books by making scrolls, which were the pre-cursor to books, and Upper School students created ceramic sculptures representing favorite books and created “Leaves of a Book” showing contour drawings of leaves in watercolor. The main lobby is increasingly being used

as an exhibit space for visual arts, including a display of embossed copper done by Upper School students. They drew pictures, put them on copper sheets lying on a soft surface, and used embossing tools to push the image into the copper. Then they turned the copper over and used finer tools for detailed work. Students in the US Art Trek and Graphic Arts classes created colorful digital work that included mandalas, totems, and quotes. Additional student work is displayed in

the hallway of Bishop Dagwell Hall, which houses the Art Department. In the fall, Middle School students studied the cave paintings from Lascaux and pictures from the Book of Kells, then drew pictures of animals on rough brown paper. They created the images with India ink and iron oxide using brushes they made themselves from hair and twigs. Lower School students exhibit in BDH and

also on the wall along the steps leading down to the LS Library. They recently studied color theory and composition by examining the work of famous artists and adapting the styles to their own work. Exhibits rotate throughout the year, so

next time you are visiting the school, be sure to allow time to peruse the exhibits. There’s always something exciting happening.
