interiors Encasement on track with new Gateshead Stadium upgrade

As part of the £multi-million refurbishment and upgrading of Gateshead International Stadium, decorative ‘Circa’ column casings from Encasement are being used to conceal structural columns of up to 7.0 metres high in the sports centre’s stylish new reception and main entrance foyer. Within the spacious ground floor area and the first floor gallery level, all of the structural columns have been concealed by 350mm and 500mm diameter pre-formed plywood column casings from Encasement, finished in brushed aluminium Formica DecoMetal®

laminate, which adds to the interior’s contempo-

rary design. Encasement supplied and installed 16 column casings for the project, six of which stand 7.0 metres high and are located adjacent to the building’s striking curved glass façade and main entrance, while the remaining ten casings stand 3.0 metres high and are situated on both the ground and upper gallery floors. To contrast with the brushed aluminium finish, each column casing is fitted with a highly polished 150mm high stainless steel collar at the base together with the jointing and infill strips, which enhance the aesthetics of the finished installation. Encasement’s MD, Martin Taylor, explained: “Gateshead Stadium is probably one of the best known venues in the UK and is highly regarded in international athletics across the world, so it’s especially pleasing for us to be involved with such an important project that has improved the facilities for competitors, spectators, students and visitors. By supplying and installing the column casings, we were not only able to integrate with the contractor’s construction programme but also take complete respon- sibility for our products from the initial order right through to the final unveiling.”

BonaTraffic Anti-Slip lacquer has been used to finish and protect the new wooden floors in the two aerial walkways on Tower Bridge. The walkways had been carpeted until a decision was made by the surveyors to find a floorcovering that would give a long term saving and would look more stylish. Bailey and Taylor sourced character grade, English Oak planks and recommended using a lacquer from Bona’s range to deliver the required look and performance. The installation was specified by a City of London Building Surveyor, who was looking for a highly durable finish with anti-slip properties. After an initial coat of Bona’s Prime Classic, which helps give the wooden surface a well-bodied appearance, three coats of Bona Traffic Anti Slip were applied according to the specification. A two component, waterborne 100 per cent polyurethane finish, Traffic Anti Slip delivers a highly durable surface in addition to anti-slip properties conforming to DIN standard 51130 – R10. Traffic Anti Slip is supplied in a matt finish with a reflective value of just 25 per cent, which means the floor maintains a natural look even after the lacquer has been applied. In addition to regular cleaning, which will be carried out by the Tower Bridge staff, Bona has recommended a half yearly maintenance regime that will be carried out by Bailey & Taylor comprising light abrading followed by re-coating with one coat of Traffic Anti Slip.
