Timber external doors – factors affecting performance TRADA Technology’s Wood Information Sheet Timber external doors, updated for ease of downloading online, discusses aspects of design and site practice, which affect the performance of external doors. An external door has a demanding role to perform and is expected to maintain its level of performance over many decades. It is mechanically stressed throughout its life due to opening and closing. Its inner face is subjected to the heated dry interior of the building, while the outer face is often exposed directly to the elements, unless protected by a porch or protective canopy. It is often installed into a building, which has not yet dried out, yet is expected to
remain flat and maintain the designed door-to-frame gaps both during and after the drying out period. TRADA members may download Timber external doors in PDF format free of charge. The cost is £12 for non-members.
enq. 169 Shackerley ceramic granite adds extra sheen to landmark healthcare building
Ryder Architecture has employed highly polished ceramic granite ventilated cladding, from Shackerley, to provide an exceptionally high standard of aesthetic finish, inside and out, at the new £25 million Institute of Transplantation at Newcastle upon Tyne’s Freeman Hospital.
Inside the lofty entrance area and atrium, contrasting black and white ceramic granite panels with a highly polished reflective finish have been used to provide sleek and dramatic floor-to-ceiling wall cladding. The black ceramic granite façade panel has also been used to clad the lift lobbies on each floor of the building.
Externally the use of Shackerley’s Sureclad system and gleaming white ventilated façades to clad the entrance area and an enclosed courtyard has helped to deliver a landmark building for the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and contributed towards a BREEAM standard of ‘Very Good’.
All cladding was installed for main contractors BAM by roofing and façade installation specialist Keyclad. enq. 170
