special report: building for education Vertical daylighting

Kalwall translucent systems, from Stoakes Systems, do not always need to have stan- dard, rectangular grids. Providing the area is large enough, variations of size, shape and layout are possible. A recent example is installed at the JCB Academy near Uttoxeter, where a new sports hall is lit with Verti-Kal featuring a ‘brick-bond’ verti- cal variation of the diffused daylighting system. This can also be used horizontally.

The JCB Academy is the first of a brand new type of school, focused on delivering high quality engineering and business education. Architects Lacey Hickey Caley were responsible for the conversion and development of this former Arkwright Cotton Mill, turning it into a new state-of-the-art Academy School. The ‘museum- quality’ natural light of Kalwall is ideal for sports halls.

enq. 131 Total approach to special toileting needs

The personal hygiene needs of the 1.75 million children with special educational needs can be more appropriately met through developments in equipment and service. Latest statistics from the Department for Education demonstrate there are currently over 90,000 pupils in special schools alone, and almost 1 million more pupils with special needs in main- stream schools. All of those children need the use of a toilet. Total Hygiene’s range of equipment not only meets the core requirements of the Building Bulletin for both accessible toilet and hygiene room provision, but can go beyond, to deliver greater independence for the child (and potentially overcome any potential issues re intimate care) from simple grab rails through hoists and height adjustable basins to its Clos-o-Mat floor-mounted Palma Vita and height adjustable Lima Lifter ‘wash and dry’ toilets. A range of paediatric supports are also available to further ensure the child’s safety when toileting. King James College in Bishop Auckland is one school which has taken advantage of using one expert source of supply. The latter’s SENCO (special education needs co-ordinator) observes: “Because of the physical difficulties some of our students have, we needed to undertake some adaptations to conventional toilet facilities. We have created a new room, with a height adjustable Clos-o-Mat, height adjustable basin and height adjustable changing table, all supplied by Total Hygiene. The students love it! We worked closely with a whole range of professionals the get the best advice, and provide the most flexible facilities that would meet the needs, and increase independence, of not only our current students, but those of the future.”

A £55 million student accommodation development in Nottingham is using inte- grated smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems from SE Controls to provide smoke free escape routes for around 1,000 students living in the new purpose designed apartments at Chettles Yard. To meet the fire safety and smoke venti- lation needs in three of the new buildings at the Chettles Yard development, SE Controls developed specific smoke and heat ventilation solutions for each accommodation block based around its versatile SHEVTEC® SHEVTEC®

system. The

which when triggered determines which shaft is closest to the fire and auto- matically opens the smoke shaft doors on each floor to extract smoke away from escape routes, corridors and stairs. Once actuated, OSLoop® monitor the entire system throughout the incident.

Abet provides a colourful change The new Student Resource Centre at the Cambridge Veterinary School, University of Cambridge, is supported by hundreds of colourful lockers surfaced with compact grade laminate from Abet Laminati. Designers Saunders Boston cleverly specified the colours to delineate different areas of the locker room. Blue is used to signify the ‘dirty side’, while green is used for the ‘clean side’. This ensures that the sterile side of the facility is kept as hygienic as possible. Abet’s compact grade is a popular choice among architects, interior designers and locker or cubicle manu- facturers. The 12mm compact grade material is manufac- tured complete with black core in standard sheet sizes of

3,660x1,610mm; larger 4,200x1,610/1,860mm sizes are available to special order. Abet’s standard compact grade comprises 42 finishes ranging from pastel and strong colours to complementary speckle effects and woodgrains.
