Ontarians Compete In International Finals Rodeo By Nancy Nicholson.

17 rodeo competitors from Ontario have quali- fied to compete at IFR42 being held January 13-15, 2012 at the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla- homa. The International Pro Rodeo Association (IPRA) sanctions 300 rodeos annually in 30 states and 3 Canadian provinces. There are 3500 members in the IPRA in 2011 and the top 15 compete in the Finals. Two contestants from Ontario are leading their events.

This is the first year Breakaway Roping will be held at the IFR and Sheri Cahill from Strathroy is leading the World Standings. Sheri started competing in Junior Steer Riding in 1984, winning year-end

ment that Luke would pay him back out of his win- nings. They always joked that he rode better when he owed Peter money. Peter’s financial and mental sup- port made Luke the rider he is today.

He also credits his girlfriend, Kansas Pickrell, who makes his entries and ensures that he is going to the best and most events possible. She is his biggest supporter and is always pushing him to do better. Family members have all supported and assisted Luke in his passion. Mom, Mary Ellen, drove him to all the rodeos when he first started competing. Sib- lings, Erin, Drew and Meghan have all provided encouragement and support. Dad, Neil, didn’t agree originally with his decision to ride bulls but since 2008, has been a full time sup- porter.

championships in 1986 and 1987. She has won several Finals and Year End Champi- onships in the Roping Associa- tion of Ontario and Ontario Rodeo Association and is the 2011 IPRA Canada and Ontario Rodeo Association Year End Champion.

Sheri will be competing on a 5 year old mare, Cahill’s Royal Dash (Squirt), that she raised and trained herself.

She grew up in a roping family and her dad, Barry Thomson and brother, Jason Thomson are her mentors. Her mother, Sue, also competed in roping events.

Sheri is a letter carrier and lives in Strathroy with her hus- band, Stu Cahill and son, Tucker.

Another event leader is Luke McCoag, who is leading the bull riding. Luke is 22 and lives in Queensville. He started riding bulls 11 years ago, fol- lowing older brother Drew’s footsteps and bull riding has now become a career and a passion for Luke. This is the 4th consecutive year he has qualified for the IFR.

Luke’s mentor is Peter Hallman, who also quali- fied for IFR42 in Saddle Bronc. Peter took Luke under his wing when Luke was 15. Peter paid Luke’s entry fees, etc. when Luke couldn’t with the agree-
