JANUARY 2012 THE RIDER /15 2011 All-Breed Trail Challenge

The 12th annual All- Breed Trail Challenge was held at a new venue and on a new date this year. We moved the date back to October 1st from Labour Day weekend. We were hoping to attract people getting ready to go to the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, as well as those finishing up their show season, be it open, breed or saddle club. The venue was the Ancaster Fairgrounds, because of the availability of the indoor arena, which we put to good use. Many thanks to Suzanne Pestano who sponsored the cost of this great facility.

Open Class was awarded a Tom Howe custom made silver belt buckle, valued at $400. Home Hardware product buckets were awarded to those with top placings in their classes. Home Hardware and the Ontario Amateur Quarter Horse Associa- tion round out the sponsors for the Chal- lenge.

Bonnie Miller of New York was the judge, with Jane Foerter of Cambridge serving as scribe. The entry booth was staffed by Kerry-Anne Janes and Cathy Cox. The announcer and “whipper in” was Doris Melitzer. Lorna Kerr was the course designer. I sat out from competing this year and served as the show manager, with Doris’ help. As usual at most trail events, everyone helped take down the course at the end of the day. Thanks everyone for your support and see you in the new year!

Also new this year was a $300 added non- AQHA class. It was well supported by paints, pintos, appaloosas and Arabians. Many thanks to Leslie Mastromatteo of Turtle Springs Farm which enabled us to offer this class. In addition to the prize money (totaling over $3500), many prizes were given out. The winner of the Walk-Jog class was awarded a grooming tote courtesy of Doris Melitzer. The winner of the Novice Horse and the Novice Rider was awarded a $200 gift certificate to Pleasant Ridge Saddlery courtesy of Leslie Mastromatteo. The winner of the non-AQHA class was awarded a Reins- man Headstall from Wellington’s Tack of Dun- das. The winner of the
