Introduction

When visitors come and spend time with us invariably what strikes them is the warm and welcoming atmosphere, with both staff and children happy and enjoying being in school. I suspect that lots of factors may contribute to this but central is the strong Christian ethos that underpins everything about us. This is worked out from the belief that each child is unique, created loved and valued by God, and so by us. Whether or not everyone who belongs to the school shares this Christian faith, they value very much the living out of these principles.

With a school population of 260 the sense of a family - like community can be developed in such a way that it is possible for all children to know each other, and also be cared for through our very strong house system. From the youngest who join us at age 7 through to those at age 13 whose next step will be on to Senior School, there is a greatly appreciated emphasis on the right combination of supervision, encouragement and initiative to ensure that education becomes in reality the whole of life. Due to this our children are able to move towards reaching their potential whether in the classroom, the music school, the games field, the ICT suites, or just as importantly, in learning what it means to exist in community, to celebrate success and handle failure, or to look beyond personal needs to the needs of others. We expect much from our children simply because we know that each one has so much to offer in who they are as much as in what they can do. Seeing them develop in the various ways they do, is a constant source of joy to us.

People are what make communities; buildings and facilities help communities such as ours to function. The better they are the better we enjoy being at school. Our Governing body is supportive and forward looking and has enabled us to improve further in this area by way of an impressive ongoing building programme. Most recently boarding and day house accommodation has been extended and refurbished, astro turf pitches have been floodlit and a brand new Sport Hall and cricket pavilion built. All this set in a 50 acre site makes the school a wonderful environment to be part of.

Finally being part of a whole school community which has over 900 children from under 3 to over 18 being educated in three interdependant schools means that we at the Prep School play our part in the provision of the kind of continuity that parents are looking for.

I hope you enjoy taking in what follows and that you might come to see Dean Close as the special place that it is.
