Joining in Year 7

We welcome many children from other schools into Year 7 and therefore to the Senior Prep part of the school. To ensure that class sizes remain small we increase the number of classes in this year group to four. All children in Year 7 and 8 are working towards their Common Entrance Exams, which they take in the Trinity term of their final year. As over 90% of our pupils move on to Dean Close School, the very close links between the schools are further increased in Senior Prep so as to ease the crucial transition from Preparatory to Senior.

Entry to Year 7 For general entry to Year 7 pupils take the 11+ Entry Tests in Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning.

Scholarships (Year 7 entry) The school offers six different types of scholarship for pupils joining in Year 7. These are: Academic, Music, All-Rounder, Sport, Art and Design Technology. For those applicants who show considerable academic promise, but not of the standard required for Scholarship, an Academic Exhibition may be offered. Awards made at 11+ carry on to the Senior School until such time as the pupil leaves Dean Close. Awards are subject to good behaviour, academic endeavour and commitment to the whole life of the School. They are rarely revoked or reduced; however, they are reviewed annually and reassessed at 13+ for entry to Senior School.

The number of individual awards made each year depends solely on the calibre of the candidates.

Trips and Outings At the beginning of Year 7 the new year group have a residential visit to Snowdonia, an exercise which breaks down any barriers and forges the strong friendships that will continue on into the Senior School.

At Easter in Year 7 there is a trip to France, which enables the children to practise their French and to experience the French way of life.

At the end of Year 8 there is the Leavers’ Week. After their Common Entrance exams are finished the year group enjoy a camping holiday in Devon, where they also get the chance to learn to abseil, canoe and surf.

Responsibility and Independence Children in Senior Prep are given greater responsibilities in the Houses and in School, helping them to grow in independence and to develop the leadership skills which will be vital in their future lives. There is also a prefect system, which rewards children who are keen to take on even greater responsibilities.

New Challenges New challenges are introduced in Senior Prep which help the children look beyond themselves to understand the hopes and needs of other people. The children take part in a community project by helping at a local school for children with severe learning disabilities. Experience has proven this to be a very worthwhile exercise at a young age and one that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
