Links to the Senior School
• Exceptional musicians have the opportunity to join DCS music groups. Currently we have string players taking part in the DCS orchestra to extend their playing.
• Links between the Prep school and Senior School are encouraged through the Choral Society – open to both parts of the school.
• Regular whole school musical collaborations. • A number of key music staff have links with both DCS and DCPS. • Senior school music scholars regularly assist boarders with their music practice.
11+ Music scholarships Children are invited to apply for Music Scholarships in Year 6. Internal candidates are auditioned on the same basis as external candidates. The Director of Music is looking for musical potential as well as current achievement and there will be an expectation that Music Scholars play a full part in the musical life of the school.
Drama, Art and Design Technology and Scholarships
Drama Drama is about many things – theatre, acting, developing presentation skills and communication techniques, instilling confidence and developing self-esteem and having fun! Two productions are performed annually - a Junior Forms Play (years 3 - 5) and the School Play (years 6 - 8). This gives every child in the school the opportunity to be involved either in acting, dancing and singing on the Langhorne Hall stage, or behind the scenes on the production side, with make up, costume, set design, sound and lighting. Recent productions include ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Godspell’, ‘The Wind in the Willows’ and ‘Aladdin’. The School play for 2011 is ‘Joesph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. All aspects of Speech and Drama are taught by specialist teachers who take the responsibility for directing the major productions, along with a close relationship with the Music Department and help from other staff members from various depart- ments in the school.
Class Drama All pupils in Years 3 - 5 in the Preparatory School have timetabled Class Drama as part of the curriculum. In these lessons, pupils are encouraged to express themselves vocally and physically and learn to work with others in a group situation. They are also taught to listen and interact with others.
Speech and Drama Speech and Drama lessons serve to focus attention on the individual, developing performance skills such as diction, expression, characterisation and performance and communication skills. Pupils taking these lessons also benefit hugely by participating in the annual Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts and are entered for the LAMDA Verse and Prose Graded Examinations. Pupils can choose to have lessons either individually, in a pair, or in a group of 3 - 5 pupils. Pupils receive 30 lessons over the course of the academic year and lessons are timetabled on a weekly rota basis.
