Children are encouraged to take up an instrument and or singing (65% of pupils are learning at least one at the moment) and they are encouraged to play instruments that are suited to their personality, maturity and musical ability. The Director of Music has a very good record of encouraging children to play the right instrument for them and the drop out rate is negligible. Regular ‘music taster’ sessions give opportunities for teachers and players within the school to inspire and encourage younger children to take up instruments they may not have previously considered.
Composition, improvisation, development of performance skills, the use of technology, singing and playing instruments in class ensembles - these are the essentials of class music teaching. Everyone takes part and provision is made for all levels of ability. There is a dedicated music IT suite which is used in the course of class music. These skills equip pupils to make the most of opportunities available at the senior school and give them a very strong foundation for GCSE music.
The peripatetic staff are outstanding musicians. Many pursue professional performing careers but they are only taken on if they are also inspiring teachers committed to developing music at all levels. Our head of strings, the internationally renowned Carducci Quartet, provide a unique opportunity for individual string teaching and for ensemble work.
We offer tuition in the full range of orchestral and band instruments: • Violin, viola, cello, double bass

Music incentive awards, involving free lessons, for up to a term may be offered to selected children taking up the more unusual instruments - viola, cello, double bass, oboe, bassoon, french horn, trumpet and trombone..
