GENSLER
SFO Terminal 2 is the first US airport to achieve LEED Gold certification.
A NEWBENCHMARK IN AIRPORT DESIGN
PROJECT: San Francisco International Airport Terminal 2 CLIENT: San Francisco International Airport LOCATION: San Francisco, USA PROJECT ARCHITECTS: Gensler and Turner Construction COMPLETION DATE: April 2011 (open to flights)
GROSS AREA: 640,000sqft
In 2008 SFO embarked on a $383million project to renovate Terminal 2 into a state-of-the-art domestic terminal to accommodate growth in passenger traffic and airline demand for gates. The terminal, which formerly housed international flights, closed when SFO’s current International Terminal opened in December, 2000. Now open, Terminal 2 is home to American Airlines and Virgin America.
Open to passengers since April 2011, the Gensler-designed
renovation has also received an LEED Gold certification, making the airport the first in the United States to be crowned with this title. Terminal 2 has a capacity for 5.5 million enplaned passengers per year, and a projected 3.2 million enplaned passengers in the first full year of operation. The project now boasts a 30,793sqft of retail development, including 12 restaurants, nine retail stores, a gourmet marketplace with a wine bar and a spa. 14 gates serve predominantly narrow-body aircrafts, but with the capability of accommodating a Boeing 747-400 sized aircraft if needed. There is also a pedestrian bridge to AirTrain, which connects to Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). By extending Bay Area culture into the terminal, the design elevates the traveler experience, making it enjoyable for travelers to spend time at the airport. And it’s hoped the Terminal’s progressive environmental design will inspire people to live more sustainably.
