CONTRACTS & PROJECTS

boundaries of sustainability Reynaers Aluminium has played a significant role in the creation of one of the most sustainable office buildings in Europe, providing curtain walling systems, windows and doors for the new Severn Trent headquarters in Coventry. The seven-storey, 38mtall headquarters, built by BAM Construction, with the help of £6.5million fromAdvantage WestMidlands and support fromCoventry City Council, has one of the lowest carbon footprints for any UK office building. Reynaers CS68 windows and Vision 50 doors were installed throughout the newdevelopment by Solaglas ContractingMidlands. Incorporating Reynaers three chamber system for improved thermal insulation, thewindows and doors help to ensure heat retention andmake the buildingmore thermally efficient.Webb Gray Architects specified Reynaers CW50 curtainwalling systemto facilitatemaximumcreative freedomin their original design proposals. This in turn produced eye catching and appealing aesthetics and also providedmaximumnatural light exposure into the building. For more information telephone 0121 421 1999 or email reynaersltd@reynaers.com

Extending the Bordon school gets green roof

Bordon has recently been announced as an Eco-Town.Whitehill Town Council gave their support to a project called the 'Green Town Vision', whichwill ensure that newdevelopment in Bordonwill bring about regeneration, while protecting the natural environment. Bordon Junior School has recently had a roof replacement and the installed Photovoltaic Energy Roof systemwas part of the grand eco scheme. The contractwas awarded byHampshire County Council to Salnor Roofing Services, who liaisedwith IKOto refine the roofing specification. IKO’s Systems Torch-on Vapour Control Layerwas installed, followed by cut- to-falls SuperthermTorch PIR Insulation system(achieving an average U-value of 0.12W/m²K), Systems Torch-on Underlay and finally Ultra prevENt BrownMineral Cap Sheet. The Ultra prevENt Torch-on waterproofing systemwas chosen due to its speed of application and long-termdurability. It also features graphite firewall technology to stop the spread of fire fromexternal sources, a popular choice of waterproofing for school buildings. In keepingwith the school’s ‘Eco’ theme,OCB Energy of Caterham, Surrey, installed 114.3sqmsurface photovoltaicmodules (IKOSolar F) providing a 6.120kWp system.

Crossgrip walkway matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders Ltd, has been specified and installed by Burren & Whitaker Construction Ltd over some flat rooftops of Epsom Hospital. Crossgrip is designed as a very safe and easily loose laid solution for rooftops, gantries and high-level walkways. It provides a slip resistant surface and protects the roof membrane. Due to its flexible construction, the matting will contour over uneven surfaces and imperfections and provide a permanent and safe walkway for service staff and wheeled equipment. Because the matting is raised 14mm by its underbar construction, it will maintain an efficient and drier path over puddles and ponding. It is maintenance free and will resist the harshest of conditions, including winds of up to 150km/h. An important benefit is its PVC composition, which will resist bacterial growth and is impervious to temperature extremes including frost, ice and snow, making it ideal for use on the most exposed areas and in the most extreme environments. Crossgrip is supplied in 10m rolls and standard widths of 60, 91 and 122cm. Formore information visitwww.plastex.co.uk

Remote solution for remote location

Guernsey’s iconic Victorian library has adopted a high tech solution for the maintenance and service of its newautomatic entrance, by installing an entrance systemfrom GEZE UK fittedwith its remote diagnostic device, iContact. During an extensive one-year refurbishment project of the historic Guilles Allès library in St Peter Port, the UK’s leading manufacturer of door and windowcontrol systems installed two glass automatic entrances, one ofwhichwas fittedwith the state-of-the-art GSM device. With no ADSA qualified service engineers on the island, itwas feared that the maintenance of the newentrancewould prove to be an expensive and time-consuming challenge. Butwith iContact installed, the entrance can bemonitored remotely 24/7 and if any operational or safety issues occur, the problemcan often be remotely repairedwithout the need for an engineer visit. Comprehensive reports about the usage, footfall and efficiency of the door can be produced, so public buildings, such as Guilles Allès, can effectively asses their environmental impact. For more information telephone 01543 443 000, email info.uk@geze.com or visit www.geze.co.uk
