FOSTER VS FARRELL

Farrell practice has worked on similar major infrastructure projects in Korea, Hong Kong and China.

FARRELL’S CONSTELLATION HUB

Farrell’s life work as an architect and urban designer has touched more areas of the city than anyone else working in the field today. Aged 72 he has always been, and remains, committed to creating a holistic plan for the capital. In contrast to Foster’s vision, which looks to reinvent the entire infrastructure system of the capital, Farrell looks to build on what already exists, complimenting and rejuvenating what is already in place. His proposals centre on a

Constellation Hub thatwould link five existing airports by high- speed rail. Farrell believes that this proposal presents a significantlymore cost-effective and sustainable alternative to Foster’s vision. “Old Oak Common, where

Crossrail and High Speed 2 will connect, will properly link five of

the nation’s major airports to the high speed rail network for the first time,” Farrell says. “Heathrow will be just 11minutes always and four other airports – Birmingham, Luton, Stansted and City Airport – will be within half an hour. High speed connections to Birmingham also give the option for an additional runway there in the future.” “We need to adopt the latest

thinking on air-side rail travel to make sure the previously complex logistical and baggage transfer issues are no longer a barrier,” Farrell continues. “It is by far the most cost effective and sustainable solution. Ifwe build a brand new £50billion airport tomeet today’s demands, thenwhatwillwe do after 20 years of exponential growth? Build another one?” Capitalising onWest London’s

wealth of existing and planned infrastructure, Farrell’s proposal takes amuchmore pragmatic approach to investment – responding to the tough economic climate inwhich these
