Editorial TrueWind NEW HANDS ON DECK
New hands on deck, new people on board Rainbow Warrior III, GreenPeace’s new- fangled operations boat is here to contribute to the battle to save the environment. A few decades ago, we would use the term “protection”, now it is an actual cry for salvation. We’re close to the point of building concrete blocks in the Aegean, turning Oia and Maganari in Ios into a scrap heap, scuttling Milos and putting up a plastic photo to remind us of Sarakiniko. However, I can’t help noticing that the other European members are not doing any better. They have blacktopped hundreds of beaches, wiped out dozens of endangered species and, generally speaking, they are pulling up their sleeves ready to continue polluting and exterminating. I doubt that we could ever do a better job in an imaginary situation where our objective would be to destroy the planet. Perhaps we would then be facing illegal tree planting, adulterated food due to organic farming, sneaky secret cleanings, etc.
Therefore, given that the planet is decaying day after day, I believe that this is the greatest unheralded war that we are called to fight, day after day. Following the “new hands on deck” campaign run by Medasset*, I choose to support the cause and get behind the barricade. No, I am not an idealist, ecologist, biologist, theoretician, green, irksome person, etc. I am simply practical. The great fight for me is to act without leaving garbage behind, reuse reusable material, recycle glass and bring back to the ground uncooked food. I understand; for some of us this is too much, some of us cannot help not spreading around oil in the form of plastic, metal in the form of foil; they feel no mercy for the natural resources, the treasures of nature which, in fact, should now be called the relics of nature.

To cut a long story short, while approaching the break of the New Year, I wish we all stand together against the daemons of pollution. I wish the environmental organisations fail to find any cause of action. I wish Rainbow Warrior and other such ships finally get to cruise on crystal blue seas.
Dedicated to the woman that unconcernedly threw away paper and plastic while her son was playing carefree and unaware of what his own mother was “cooking” for his future.

*An interesting study was carried out by environmentalist Katerina Perraki including a detailed record of the garbage found on the beaches and a thorough study on the seabathers’ habits. Soon, we will have the unfortunate pleasure to present it online.
