Ο δρόµος για το Abu Dhabi
Την Κυριακή 11 ∆εκεµβρίου, νωρίς το πρωί ανακοινώθηκαν επισήµως όπως προβλέπει ο κανονισµός τα ονόµατα των αγωνιζοµένων. Κυβερνήτες, πληρώµατα, σκάφη, οµάδες εργασίας, οργανωτική επιτροπή ήταν σε πλήρη ετοιµότητα. Ο µετεωρολόγος έδινε Νότιους – Ν∆ ανέµους εντάσεως 15-20 κόµβους. Τα σκάφη έπρεπε να ταξιδέψουν περίπου 35 µίλια να καβατζάρουν το κάβο, µια καλή δοκιµασία για τα σκάφη που είχαν υποστεί ζηµιές και έχουν νέα αρµατωσιά. Ο στόλος καλείται να καλύψει 5430 ναυτικά µίλια να ταξιδέψει προς το Ακρωτήρι της Καλής Ελπίδας να αφήσει τον Ατλαντικό, να µπει Ινδικό, µε πορεία ΒΑ αφήνοντας δυτικά τη Μαδαγασκάρη να φτάσει στο Abu Dhabi. Ήταν 15.00 όταν σήµανε η εκκίνηση του 2ου σκέλους µε προορισµό το Abu Dhabi. Η οµάδα του Ian Walker στήθηκε επικεφαλής του στόλου αποφασι- σµένος να αντιµετωπίσει τα όρτσα µε εντάσεις έως και 30 κόµβους και όλες τις δεισιδαιµονίες που τον είχαν παροπλίσει την πρώτη νύχτα του πρώτου σκέλους. H οµάδα Abu Dhabi ολοκλήρωσε πρώτη το inshore µπροστά στο Table Bay ακολουθούµενη µε απόσταση αναπνοής από το Camper, στη τρίτη θέση το Puma, το Groupama, το Sanya και τον νικητή του σκέλους Telefοnica να ακολουθεί.
Το 2ο σκέλος αποτελεί ίσως το δυσκολότερο όλου του αγώνα, οι αποφάσεις πρέπει να είναι καλά µελετηµένες και θα κρίνουν πολλά

The Way to Abu Dhabi
Early on Sunday morning of December, 11 the names of the contestants were officially announced according to the race regulations. Captains, crews, boats, support teams, organising committee were all set to go. The meteorologist announced S-SW winds of 15-20 knots. The boats had to travel almost 35 miles to go round the cape, a good tryout for those which had suffered damages and had a new rigging. The fleet needs to cover 5,430 nautical miles until the Cape of Good Hope, then leave the Atlantic behind and enter the Indian Ocean, heading NE and leaving Madagascar to the west all the way to Abu Dhabi. At 15.00 echoed the starting signal for Leg 2 which ends at Abu Dhabi. Ian Walker’s team took the lead, ready to face the weather upwind with winds blowing at up to 30 knots and with all the superstition that had them shelved during the first night of Leg 1. The Abu Dhabi team finished first the inshore race in front of Table Bay, followed by Camper at a hairsbreadth. Puma finished third, followed by Groupama, Sanya and finally the winner of the Leg, Telefonica.
