Embracing old and new...

NEW SOUKS Another hugely popular attraction

is Souk Madinat Jumeriah, which offers an authentic shopping experience set in a comfortably air-conditioned environment. Meandering paths and water- ways lead visitors through a bazaar-like atmosphere, filled with open-fronted shops, intimate galleries, and streetside cafŽs. It features 75 boutique shops and 23 waterfront cafŽs, bars and restaurants, as well as numerous open air plazas and walkways. Located in Downtown Dubai is Souk Al Bahar, which is another modern take on the traditional souk theme. The souk is best known for its many F&B outlets, including the city's only Dean & Deluca cafe and top bars and restaurants such as Left Bank, Rivington Grill and Mango Tree. It is linked to two hotels – The Pal- ace, Old Town and The Address Downtown Dubai – and by a small footbridge to the bustling Dubai Fountain side of Dubai Mall with its promenade and eating area.

GOLD SOUK

Walking through the Gold Souk you will be dazzled as you pass row upon row of gleaming shops selling diamonds and bright gold. Along the slightly larger lanes are shops crammed with gold necklaces, rings, bangles, ear- rings and brooches in an opulent display of consumerism. Dubai boasts one of the lowest gold prices in the world, and goods are usually sold on weight as opposed to detail or craftsman- ship. Haggling is essential. Always remember to check the current price of gold before embarking on a shopping expedition. In the evening, the area is a hive of activity as locals and visitors come out to promenade beneath the high-ceilinged and heavily fanned walkways.

36 SPICE SOUK

Many visitors will also enjoy a trip to the nearby Spice Souk. With its bustling narrow streets and fra- grant spices precariously stacked up against one another, you'll be sure to appreciate the smells and ambience of this market. Stock up on saffron, vanilla pods, cinna- mon, and dried orange and lemon for a spicy and fragrant treat. Souk Al Kabeer and the Meena Bazaar are great places to visit if you're in search of some colourful textiles. With many shops offering wares from India and Pakistan, there's a huge range of jewel encrusted silks, brightly coloured satins, paisley printed crepe and pastel chiffons to choose from. Prices are reasonable and what's more, you're sure to get something original you won't find at home.

DIGITAL DREAMS Looking for bargain electronics?

Dubai's position as the Middle East's top re-export market makes it a haven for traders offering bargain goods. Bur Dubai is the traditional epicentre for this trade, but before you part with your hard earned, just be sure the product in question comes with a global warranty and is technically com- patible with your home country. Dubai is also home to an increasing number of 'power' retailers, including Jacky's Electronics, Plug-Ins Electron- ics and Jumbo Electronics who also offer bargains on leading brands and are well-versed in dealing with visitors to Dubai.
