SPORT FOR ALL

While Oman is best known for its watersports, such as diving and sailing, the capital, Muscat, is aiming to establish itself as a world-class golfing destination

GHALLAH WENTWORTH GOLF CLUB

Established in 1972, but now occupying its third location just 15 minutes' drive from the interna- tional airport, this challenging 18-hole desert course is set in a valley bordered by a dramatic mountain range offering sweeping views over the Gulf of Oman. The only privately financed and owned club in the country, it is run entirely by its members and is open to visitors looking to play on its 'browns'; fairways created by mixing sand with oil.

MUSCAT HILLS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB In mid-2009, the Sultanate teed off its golf development plans with the opening of the Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club, the first grass course in the country. Muscat Hills was designed by Paul Thomas, son of former Ryder Club player Dave Thomas, whose portfolio includes La Manga West in Spain, the Seve Ballesteros Golf Club and the Top Players Golf Club in Japan. The course, which is located adjacent to Muscat Interna- tional Airport, has a challenging topography with its greens and fairways routed over dips and curves created by dried-up wadis to create a unique terrain. The course is designed to test more serious golfers.

A full range of complementary facilities are available, includ- ing an on-site golf academy alongside the existing driving range. Complementing the PGA-

standard 18-hole championship grass course is a clubhouse that includes a well-stocked pro shop and restaurant and bar.

Course amenities also include top-of-the-line, sturdy Yamaha golf carts, with colour GPS premium rental sets. In addition to ongoing residential and hotel developments tied to the course, the club is planning to open a special events facility, which will be known as The Majlis. It is being designed as an innovative 'see-through' struc- ture, built on a single floor on the highest promontory in the development. While it will be a private facility, owned by Mus- cat Hills, The Majlis will also be made available for select corporate events.
