The port town of Sur is well-known for its dhow and fishing boat (sambuk) builders.
What’s there
Attractions include the Maritime Museum, two forts, a natural lagoon and nearby beaches. The fishing village of Ayega hasn't changed much over the centuries and is easily reached by a short ferry ride across the narrow inlet to the lagoon.
Visitors can also take a short trip out to the beautiful spring of Wadi Shab, the heal- ing waters of Ain Al Milah and Ain Al Harid, and visit the many caves dotting the region. Masirah: From Sur, visitors can also take a ferry trip to Masirah, Oman's largest island and where Alexander the Great made his base. Masirah is home to the world's largest population of nesting turtles and hosts all four of Oman's nesting species Ð Loggerhead, Green, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill. This wildlife is celebrated at the new Natural History Museum at Swiss- Belhotel Resort, Masirah.

MUSANDAM PENINSULA Located in the north of Oman, Musan- dam is part of Omani territory that is divided from the rest of the country by the UAE. It is one of the most pictur- esque regions in the Gulf and is home to the 'Fjords of Arabia' Ð barren, sheer cliffs that in some areas drop 2,000 metres into the sea.
What’s there
The principal town of Khasab boasts the remains of a 16th century Portu- guese fort. Khasab Fort is a pictur- esque stronghold situated on the inner cove of Khasab Bay. The fort boasts a colossal central tower within its low crenulated walls, thought to pre-date the fort itself. It was restored in 1989.
