The Elephant, in the Valley of Fire.

dozen RV’s camping on the hill that first night and we were treated to an exciting Nevada sandstorm. In the Village of Overton, there are two RV parks with adequate facilities. On entering the park a $10 US fee

is charged. Make sure you stop at the Visitors’ Center that provides exhibits on the geology, ecology and history of the area. Te star attractions in the park are the red, orange and white rock formations. At some rock formations, such as the Seven Sisters, you are allowed

to walk among the rocks, giving you a hands-on experience. Te Scenic Loop Road [2 miles], near the west entrance, features the Beehive, Piano, Arch and Atlati Rocks. At Atlati Rock, climb the stairs to the Indian petroglyphs. An atlati was a predecessor to the bow and arrow and was a notched stick used in

throwing a spear. On our visit, a group of marksmen were practicing for the World’s Atlati Championship. Another interesting site is Petroglyph Canyon that leads to the Mouse’s Tank, a

natural basin where water collects and has been used as a hideout for outlaws. Te hike is only .8 miles and contains many Indian petroglyphs along the canyon walls. Te park has other attractions such as: petrified logs, hiking trails, the White Domes and the Rainbow Vista. If the Valley of Fire looks familiar, it was used in a number of movies, including:

Te Professional, Cherry 2000, Total Recall, Star Trek: Te Next Generations, Domino, Transformers, Airwolf [CBS TV Show - calling it the Valley of the Gods] and Chriss Angel’s, Mindfreak [TV Show]. It does not matter if you decide on the Valley of Fire or the Valley of the Gods.

Visit them both, as they are very different and worth exploring. You will not be disappointed. e
