Valley of FIRE vs
The Valley of The GODS
BY DENNIS (and Patricia) BEGIN It was my original intention to compare and contrast these two parks.
Te task appeared to be simple: compare the similarities and differences of two beautiful parks with red sandstone rock formations in a picturesque desert setting. Te idea seemed simple.
How different could two valleys be, both designed with RV’ers in mind?
As snowbirds, my wife Patricia and I are always looking for new horizons and these two destinations seemed suited for us.
Valley of the Gods Te Valley of the Gods is located in Utah, 33 miles north of Monument Valley
or eight miles from Mexican Hat, Utah. Te valley forms a ‘V’ shape, bordered by Highways 261 to the northwest and Highway 163 to the northeast. Tis is not a national park but land under the jurisdiction of the BLM [Bureau of Land Management] or the federal government. Te proper name is Cedar Mesa Cultural and Recreational Management Area. Te Valley of the Gods is a pure wilderness experience with a 17-mile road looping through the valley floor. Tere are no campsites, washrooms, water, garbage cans or

paved roads. Motorhomes/fiſth wheels are not recommended, with no vehicles over 28’ and 10,000 pounds. Tere is no entrance fee but on the other hand, you are completely on your own and the word ‘solitude’ takes on a new meaning. Carry a spare tire, pack a picnic basket, bring a cellphone and have a full tank of fuel. You can enter the valley from the east or west but for the best morning light for photos, enter from the east. Te gravel road in my opinion was remarkably good and is accessible by most vehicles, although at times the road was bumpy, hilly and we needed to drive through wet or dried riverbeds. Our Suzuki tow car with four-wheel drive easily handled the road conditions. Te valley averages 5,000-ſt in elevation, with the spring and fall being the best time to visit. Summer months are too hot. Te average winter temperatures of 33 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit makes it very comfortable. Te Valley of the Gods is 50 square
miles and located at the base of the 1,100-ſt Cedar Mesa on the Colorado Plateau. Te valley has many monoliths or buttes with names like: Women in a Bathtub, Te Submarine, Seven Sailors, Balanced Rock and Red Butte. Te
