The Valley of Fire Rock Formations and Highway

2,600-ſt in elevation, the valley has winter temperatures from 32 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Located in the Mojave Desert, the red colour of the sandstone rocks comes from iron oxide, as well as limestone and shale conglomerates. T e black colour is desert varnish coming from manganese. T e rock formations, formed 150 million years ago, have names like: Atlati Rock, Arch Rock, Beehives, Piano Rock, Mouse’s Tank, Seven Sisters, Elephant Rock and the main viewpoint called Rainbow Vista with the White Domes along the road. For RV’ers, the park has two campgrounds with 73 sites. T e sites have tables,

grills, some power, water and a dump station. On our visit in March, the two park campsites were full, while the campground outside the park at Overton Beach was closed. No reservations are taken, with a fi rst come-fi rst serve policy. We solved the accommodation problem by boondocking just outside the park on a hill overlooking the Moapa Valley and the little town of Overton. T ere were three-

Castle Rock, Valley of the Gods.
