Yearling Sale Exceeds Totals from Past Two Years

By Barbara Sheridan

Some say it was the new Sale format - changing the one-day Selected Session to two days, while others say the Sale’s popularity was due to the lucrative purses at Woodbine Race- track coupled with the excellent incentives derived from Ontario’s Thoroughbred Improve- ment Program (TIP). Whatever the reason, the annual CTHS Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale saw

more active bidding, renewed interest and sever- al new faces to the auction, which produced over $6 million in gross receipts.

The first of the two Selected Sessions took place on Sept. 5th with 70 head catalogued. By the night’s end, 48 yearlings sold for a total of $1,322,000, at an average of $27,542. The sec- ond session continued Sept.6th, with 100 year- lings selling for $3,481,500, at an average of $34,815. The Open Session concluded Sept. 10th, with 129 yearlings selling for $1,266,600, at an average of $9,819.

Overall, this year’s Canadian-Bred Sale saw 277 yearlings being purchased for a total of $6,070,100. In 2010, 294 head brought in $4,938,100, while in 2009, 303 head sold for $5,523,800.

William and Anne Scott of Calgary, Alberta purchased the Sales topper, a son of the hot, young sire War Front, for $140,000. Out of the Seattle Slew mare Terrigal, the dark bay colt was bred by Punch and Anne Kent of Hope Stock Farm and consigned by Richard G. Hogan, Agent.

Earlier in the Selected Session, Bear Sta- bles of Bonnyville, Alberta purchased a Philan- thropist-Pyrenee colt for $120,000 through the Paradox Farm Inc. consignment, while later in the evening, a Kitten’s Joy-Classic Stamp filly sold for $120,000 to Mark Casse, Agent from the Richard Moylan, Agent consignment. An added highlight to the annual Sale was the Yearling Sale Reception hosted by the CTHS and sponsored by BFL Canada and the TIP. Over 200 people attended the social event, which was held in the Northern Dancer Room at Woodbine Racetrack. The night’s festivities included excellent door prizes, entertainment, and food.

The Ontario CTHS would like to extend a big thank you to all those who participated in this year’s Yearling Sale and would like to con- gratulate everyone on their successes. The results of the 2011 Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale can be viewed by visiting ww.cthsont.com/yearsale.php.
