AQHA Director’s Report

By Kathy Patterson SHOW LEVELS

As many of you are aware, there will be some significant changes coming to AQHA Shows over the next few years with the new program of ‘Show Levels’.

The AQHA competition leveling plan is ready for test- ing, next year, followed by full implementation in 2013. The plan was developed and recom- mended by the AQHA Blue- Ribbon Task Force and was approved by the AQHA Execu- tive Committee at their July meeting.

Basically, the leveling pro- gram is a handicapping system

which includes some new divi- sions. There will be more and different awards plus two novice championship shows for amateur and youth exhibitors. Leveling involves these new divisions: Rookie (based on the exhibitor and horse’s experi- ence points combined and designed to be the true entry into AQHA competition). Novice (based on the exhibitor’s experience). Green (based on the horse’s experience). Inter- mediate ( based on the exhibitor’s experience). Pro- gressive (based on the horse’s experience) and Open.

including a very successful one at Carp, Ontario. Next year the Rookie horse and exhibitor level will officially be implemented. Rookie classes within shows will also be another option for the open, amateur and youth divisions next year.

Throughout 2012 AQHA will test the leveling program by running scenarios on shows that have been held and in some instance, testing both the exhibitor and horse leveling at various shows.

This year AQHA has effectively tested Rookie classes at 10 AQHA-approved shows,

The testing will allow the competition department to make any needed modifications before full implementation. A testing period was the primary reason the Executive Committee opted

for the phased-in approach rather than full introduction in 2012. The plan is to conduct six or seven test-pilot leveling shows and analyze them to make sure the system works the way it’s intended and to allow show managers the chance to become familiar with the new formats.

It is expected that the two other new levels will be imple- mented in 2013 and their points will count toward AQHA world show qualification, year-end high-point awards and the AQHA Incentive Fund.

SHOW MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS

The overall goal of the new show leveling program is to get more new people involved in showing their American
