26/ OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2011 THE RIDER

The King Of Cowboys Turns 80 Years Old

By Kelly Bowers.

One of Ontario’s best known horsemen is turning 80 years old on Oct. 29th. Roy Ionson’s family is hosting a Birthday Party on Sun- day November 6th. Everyone is welcome from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Nassagaweya Hall in Brookville. This is located at 11264 Guelph Line (a few miles north of the Mohawk Race Track in Campbel- lville) - Best Wishes Only. For more information, you can call Joan at 519-363-5598.

Most of you will know Roy from the over 55 years he has been involved in the horse industry. He has been involved in everything from buying/selling, breeding, and training to showing and judging. Roy got his first Quarter Horse “Buck- skin Waggoner” in 1954, and as far as we know “Charile” was the first Quarter Horse to be shown in Ontario. Since that time Roy has sold many successful show horses in all disci- plines and of course lots of good family riding horses. In the 60’s and 70’s Roy always kept 100 to 125 horses for sale. Many young, aspiring cowboys worked for Roy and went on to successful careers. Roy was the

horse, Blue Hornet.

It was a memorable day when Roy’s horse “Top Azure Rocket” won the first $100,000. It was the Rags to Riches Futurity at Picov Downs in 1985. His dam cost $350. and the stud fee was free! -Thanks to Top Azure Man’s owner, Gil Dingman. To this day, Roy still enjoys riding at the Com- munity Pasture nearby where he and Joan assist in checking, round- ing up and sorting 1100 head of cattle. It is nice change from run- ning Ionson’s Saddlery. In 2004, the family business moved to the south end of Chesley in beautiful Bruce County. There, he has about 300 western new and used saddles, plus everything else need- ed for a horse.

founding president of the Ontario Quarter Horse Association and was president or director of many other organizations. He was Presi- dent of the Western Horse Assoc. of Ontario for 6 years, founding director of the Ontario Rodeo Association, Ontario Reining Assoc. and was Vice President of the Canadian Horse Council. Roy is well respected and admired by his peers which earned him the nickname, “The King of Cow- boys” and the recognition of being inducted into the Ontario Quarter Horse Association Hall Of Fame in January, 1998.

Over the years, Roy has owned and showed many great horses including AAA AQHA Champion Sugar Joe Reed, AQHA Champions Poco Fury & Flying San, plus a memorable cutting

Roy has been blessed with a wonderful family who wish him all the best with love. He's been married to Joan for 53 years and there were kids too. All grown up now, there is Bruce, Judi, Lee and Leslie, plus grandkids Madison and Avery. Roy is fortunate to have made lots of life-long friends due to a shared interest in horses. Joan and Roy agree that "Life doesn't get any better than that" and Joan hopes they all come out to the party. If you ask Roy the secret to living a long happy life, he will tell you to "Keep busy doing what you love best and sur- round yourself with people of all ages - keep looking ahead to the future"! Now, That's good down- home advice from the King of Cowboys.

After the show, new directors were elected at the AGM, the Silent Auction brought in more than $350 and our Conti- nental Saddle Raffle went very well with Greg Crispin being the lucky winner.
