As businesses fight back against recessionary trends and the threat of a double-dip in the economy, one the Midlands’ leading construction companies is embarking on a strategy for growth. CHRIS WEBSTER, chief executive of Miller Construction, explains how the firm is developing its regional and national reputation.

White have joined the business as regional design manager, regional commercial director and business development director, respectively. Their arrivals complement the appointment of Simon Burton as regional managing director at the end of last year, further strengthening the team and local knowledge in the region. relationships on a more personal level and enables quick mobility if required – it’s just one of the reasons our clients return to us. Currently, 73 per cent of the projects we are working on are for
repeat clients. This isn’t just down to our regional base but our overall quality service that enables us to deliver outstanding projects which not only benefit the end user but the community and the environment. We take our environmental commitments seriously and have
excellent corporate responsibility credentials. We are very proud of our corporate responsibility achievements to date but with an appetite for continuous progression, we are keen to focus on areas which perhaps need a little more work. We are also delighted to have recently become a regional member of Business in the Community (BITC), a business-led charity which advises, supports and challenges members to create a sustainable future for people and the planet. This membership will see us supporting community and corporate
responsibility initiatives in the areas where we work, in a more co- ordinated, focused manner. Towards the end of the year we will be working to adopt a recognised corporate responsibility structure which will be at the forefront of our environmental agenda. Frameworks are also key to our workload and we continue to seek opportunities. We have considerable framework success in our strongest markets, education and health. We are currently working closely with Leicester City Council to
deliver the second phase of their Building Schools for the Future programme. In the first phase we delivered four schools and we are currently on site at Rushey Mead Secondary School, with two further schools in the pipeline for the end of the year. We have also built a strong relationship with Staffordshire University as
we continue to deliver its new £30 million Science and Technology Centre. Earlier this summer we were awarded our first programme of
works under the ProCure 21+ framework, on behalf of South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Opportunities are also presenting themselves within the Ministry of Justice framework and we look forward to progressing with these in the coming months. We are on a journey to grow our business not just in size and strength but as an overall key player in the industry. As we continue to build our team in the Midlands and South West, I am confident in the next three to five years we will be regarded as a top five contractor in the area.
