JANE’S JOTTINGS up at the school gates for this month.

Writing Right Spare

a thought for all our little cherubs turning

I daresay there won’t be a great diff erence between what they learn, what we parents learned and what I taught as a primary school teacher.

But one thing I read recently has left me aghast. Apparently, some people are thinking of ending the teaching of handwriting. In my opinion, that’s defi nitely the wrong place to put the full stop.

Yes, we all know the future’s digital and that in cyberspace, all the fonts and typefaces are at our disposal. What point learning to navigate pen across paper when our youngsters will only be expected to bash their thoughts onto a keyboard?

As they say, ‘the medium is the message’. Calligraphy was always my strong point. I was very proud to win the handwriting competition at Arthington village show

near my home in Yorkshire when I was ten years old. As a teacher, I enjoyed passing on my skills and passion for the art.

It’s a way of putting a little love and personality into one’s thoughts over and above the words themselves.

In SE9, it’s all there to see; the trendy lettering above Angela McNeill’s interior design window tells us about the shop; the upstanding Roman Capitals of Harrison Ingram’s estate agency command their corner site; the jaunty print script of the Pet Emporium in Eltham High Street and, of course, the modernist lettering of the Eletriq Café, soon to disappear. And down the road there are the copperplate swirls of SE9’s remaining independent Italian restaurant La Bella Rosa. All these calligraphic details tell us a little more than what it says

SEnine

on the tin.

It’s good to read that Greenwich Community College still off ers a calligraphy class at Haimo School, and I imagine it’s as popular as ever.

Long may those little cherubs in the Eltham classrooms have the chance to put pen to paper. Who knows, they may be the last generation that does.

Jane Webb has lived in Eltham since '85 with her husband and daughter. She has taught at several local primary schools' Greenwich Community Choir
