Reds under the Bed in Eltham Just
because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they are not
out to get you. Pack of Lies is set in the middle of the Cold War and against a backdrop of paranoia that this tale adds weight to. Taking the true story of Peter and Helen Kroger, who were convicted of espionage in 1961, as a starting point, Hugh Whitemore has crafted a fi ctional account of their ‘civilian’ life. Pack of Lies centres on Bob, Barbara and Julie Jackson. The Jacksons are a nice couple and their daughter who live opposite the Krogers from Canada, and view them as their closest friends. But when the creepy Mr Stewart (Ian Welch) from MI5 coerces the Jacksons to permit their home to be used as a base to spy on their friends, the web of lies and deception between the friends shatters the happy suburban life.
Helen Kroger (Gill Peters) is a vivacious and caring friend to Barbara Jackson (Anne Hempstead). Helen adds colour and warmth to Barbara’s
dull ordinary life. Julie Learn Total

Jackson (Stephanie Ferrie) calls her Auntie and Helen spends a lot of time in the Jackson’s home. Peter Kroger (Val Youngman) is quieter than is wife but still genial. And completing the four friends is Bob Jackson (Kevin Coward).
Mr Stewart foists his girls (Helga Brandao and Sarah Pinel) on the Jacksons to spy on the Krogers. But the pressure of deception pushes Barbara to breaking point. Bob supports his wife as she unravels under the strain of betraying her friends, and lying to their daughter about what is going on. The layers and
complexities of both friendship and betrayal are what make this interesting.
