SEnine SPY summer picture special
SPY isn’t sure about the reputation of Hyde Housing as a landlord but hopes that it’s better than their record as landscape gardeners. He spotted this very dead looking specimen alongside Well Hall Road some months ago but apparently nobody’s that bothered about doing anything very creative, like chopping it down and planting something more decorative. Let’s hope they’re a bit better at mending leaking taps.
Nice to see ‘The Railway Children’ back at Well Hall, even if only in poster form to advertise the production at Waterloo Station. This poster was spotted on the ramp up to Platform 1 at Eltham. Pity the connection isn’t commemorated on the station’s signs, instead of the meaningless references to the Green Chain Walk, which doesn’t run within half a mile, and could equally apply to about 30 other stations across south east London.
Ye Olde Yack and Yeti. You heard it here fi rst. Eltham’s latest eaterie is due to open in early September after a frantic refurb job of the High Street’s longest standing derelict site, the Greyhound pub. Having secured planning permission to convert the empty pub into a Nepalese restaurant, the owners of the emerging chain have wasted little time in bringing things to the boil. But, in a nod to the building’s history, the old pub sign will continue to swing. The council’s conservation team have insisted that the sign is retained and the owners intend to give it a lick of paint. The ‘Yack and Yeti’ signs won’t be emblazoned on the building’s front wall either but will be discretely displayed on its own hanging nearby. Watch out for any unusual footprints.
SPY is assured by the organisers of the Sunday morning boot fair off Bexley Road that they don’t need planning permission for their venture. This is because they only intend to run it through the summer months, less than the 14 events a year required to need offi cial permission. Does this apply to the ad hoc signs whacked on gates and posts as well?

Apparently, Greenwich environment boss Maureen O’Mara has shown due contrition about the state of weed growth on our streets this summer, exposed by SPY last month, the offi cial contractor having been kicked into the long grass. That’s one you’re not likely to read in Greenwich Time.
