Musical name changes…. Just as the Ferrier estate, named after famous contralto Kathleen, is being re- born as Kidbrooke Village, so Kidbrooke School becomes the Corelli Academy, named after little known novelist Marie. Watch out Tallis, named after English composer

Thomas. Will the name survive the move to new premises?

Heading off … One name defi nitely changing at Tallis next term is that of the headteacher, a title apparently soon to be dis-invented. Rob Thomas resigned at the end of last term, to be replaced by the former head of Woolwich Poly School, Byron Parker as ‘executive head’. A new ‘head of school’ will be chosen in September.

Olympian Eff ort…

SPY understands that, just as the world’s athletes descend on the borough, the last grains of the Ferrier Estate will be heading out in demolition trucks. Berkeley bosses hope the ‘decant’ of former residents will be completed by the end of this year, allowing the fi nal remnants of the Ferrier to be swept away in the fi rst six months of Olympic year.

Stumped… Rumours crossing SPY’s desk are that the new cricket platform in Eltham Park South will cost around £120 to hire by local groups. This will come as a shock to local parents who might have been hoping to let their kids lose on it for an afternoon. Apparently the thinking is that it’s designed to appeal to local cricket clubs, rather than for regular family usage. But haven’t existing clubs already got places to play? Places with changing rooms, for example?

Trumpet this… Lovely to hear the sound of good old traditional bands wafting across our parks this summer. Both Well Hall Pleasaunce and Eltham Park

Time out? SPY wonders whether SEnine readers will wish to write to the district auditor about the council’s decision to continue to produce a weekly Greenwich Time. The new government code on council publicity suggests such publications should be limited to four a year and not ‘emulate’ commercial publications in style and content. SPY would like to point out that recent editions have carried a range of local advertising, reports on local professional sports teams, national fi lm reviews, golden weddings, celeb interviews and theatre reviews. Emulation possibly? The government says that breaches of the code should be reported to the district auditor whose name and address is Sue Exton, District Auditor, 1st Floor, Millbank Tower, Millbank, London SW1P 4HQ

Budge it… Ms Exton’s main quest is to check the council is acting in a cost eff ective way. Given that, of the 353 councils in the country, only two publish weekly newspapers this probably tells you all you need to know about cost- eff ectiveness. Neighbouring Lewisham cut back its ‘Life’ publication to four a year as part of budget cuts last year. Bexley does similar.

The statutory South

hosted concert bands, thanks to the Parksfest initiative, funded by Greenwich Council and organised by parks friends groups.

notices, publication of which is one of the reasons given for issuing Greenwich Time, are delivered by Bexley Council via a contract with local free sheets for less than £25,000 a year SPY is told. A little more cost eff ective than the cost of Greenwich Time, coming in at £650,000? The council claims that is covered by adver tising; h o we ve r , most of this revenue comes from its own departments, not from outside companies, whose adverts don’t bring in enough revenue to cover the sales and billing

staff . They’re really there for ‘emulation’ purposes (see above). That address again is Sue Exton, District Auditor, 1st Floor, Millbank Tower, Millbank, London SW1P 4HQ

Injury to Insult… Parents and teachers at Christ Church primary on Shooters Hill are spitting tacks, SPY understands, at developments this summer in the long running wrangle over their modernisation plans. A keenly fought public inquiry over their project to bring a stretch of grass behind the school into their outdoor play area was due to start in August. But the start has been scuppered because the inspector had suff ered ‘a minor injury’. So it’s off until February! While open space campaigners will be delighted at the delay, SPY can only marvel at the ineffi ciency of ‘m’learned friends’ in organising the bout.

Off the rails….

SPY understands that the proposal for the DLR to reach Eltham and Falconwood from north of the river have fallen foul of London Mayor Boris Johnson. The link, from Silvertown, which would come up alongside the A2 through Kidbrooke, has been given the technical thumbs-up in a study commissioned by Greenwich Council, albeit with a fairly substantial price tag. But Boris has an edict of ‘no more London crossings’ which has put a blocker on the whole deal. Except for his cable car, of course. SPY wonders if perhaps this could be extended to Eltham instead?
