Great Harwood residents asked to prepare and to help. The residents of Great Harwood and the surrounding towns are asked to start their preparations for the Great Harwood Civic Society’s next two events:

-The Charity Market on Saturday morning, August 20th – the event takes place on the Town Hall Square and gives the local voluntary, community and faith groups the opportunity to raise money for their causes or simply gives them a platform to promote the good work they do in the area.

The Horticultural Show on Saturday, September 3rd – this traditional event gives the residents of the town, young and old alike, the chance to demonstrate their talents in a variety of different craft sections including flowers, vegetables, floral art, baking, knitting, handicrafts, photography and painting. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take part in this annual event.

Further details and application forms are available from the Civic Society’s Chairman, Steve Aspin – 01254 889328.

Local residents are also asked if they have any old photographs of the town and its people that they would be willing to donate or would be willing to have copied. These photographs can then be displayed at the various Civic Society functions and can be enjoyed by everyone.

In a month blighted by bad weather, Dave Knox of Sherdley Park Golf Club claimed victory in Great Harwood’s John Smith’s Open Singles at the end of June, beating Accrington’s Sal Badrudin to the £300 first prize by virtue of a better back nine. Both players returned nett 66s on a humid day, but 15-handicapper Knox’s back nine was a shot better. The club’s Junior Captain, Aidan Jones, was the best placed of the home players. His 79/10/69 was good enough to claim third place ahead of club-mate Simon Shields (80/11/69). It was a successful venture over old ground for Clitheroe’s Gary Byrne. The ex-Great Harwood member claimed the £100 gross prize with a one-over-par round of 74. Sherdley Park’s Tommy Newton fired a nett 70 to claim 5th, while

John Wyer (78/7/71) and Paul Birtwell (81/9/72)

continued their fine seasons by taking the 6th and 7th prizes respectively. Des Finlay and his guest Chris Clarke lifted the club’s invitation title, winning via a card play-off against Mark Jones and his guest after both pairs had ended the day on 44 points. Dave Kay fired an immaculate round of 76/11/65 to win the July Medal by one shot from Martin Burton (78/12/66). Kay was three over par after just four holes but blitzed his way round from there not, playing the last 15 holes in level par, including a birdie-par-birdie finish. Michelle Dewell saw her Lady Captain’s Day on July 10th washed out with barely a ball being hit. Heavy and persistent rain caused the flooding of several greens, meaning the day was abandoned with the opening group having played just two holes. The club was hosting it’s annual Company Day on Friday July 22nd, more details in next months Herald.
