Greetings once more from the Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton. ‘Service Above Self’ has long been the over-riding slogan of Rotary throughout the world but what does it mean to Members of our Club? Over the past several months we have highlighted many of the major activities and projects that we are involved with and the money we raise, with your help, to make them possible. All these activities can be defined as ‘Service’ because they are undertaken for the benefit of the community at large, be it locally or further afield. Behind each event there lies the personal ‘Service’ by members who give many hours to planning and carrying through each project to its conclusion. In addition to turning out on the street with a collecting box, members also give of their time in conveying young people to and from the Lakeland venues of the RYLA and RYPEN courses, or a family to the site of the caravan holiday near Blackpool, being marshals for community events such as the Rishton Festival and the Great Harwood Fair and much more. Other less obvious community activities requiring personal time involve 3 or 4 members reading for the ‘Talking Newspaper for the Blind’ in Accrington for 3 hours each month, a team of 4 spending half a day sorting clothing at

Much Hoole, half a dozen spending a day as a would-be employer interviewing pupils

the International Aid warehouse at at Norden School’s ‘Mock

Interviews’ and so on. In addition individual members collect and sort used postage stamps, bar codes off Yorkshire Tea packaging, cast-off spectacles, used printer cartridges and mobile telephones, give talks to other groups and help staff events to raise funds for various charitable causes ranging from treating leprosy to the Air Ambulance. In short Rotarians are prepared to ‘go the extra mile’ to help others and in doing so find fellowship in working with people of a like mind. If you feel you share the same outlook on life and would like to be part of a group of men and women who translate their feelings into action why not get in touch? The Rotary Club meets each Tuesday evening at House Hotel, Whalley Road,

the Sparth Clayton-le-Moors. For more

If you ever get the sudden urge to run around naked, try sniffing some Windowlene first. It's supposed to prevent streaking.
